Levels taught:
GCSE, A Level/Pre U, Oxbridge admissions I do not usually teach KS3 or below.
If you are seeking help with undergraduate work, feel free to book a free introductory session and we will see if I can assist you.
If you are not studying towards an exam but would like help with a particular aspect of your French, feel free to book a free session.
How I work:
First of all, the student and I will meet for half an hour (free of charge) so we can ascertain where help is needed and set objectives and expectations. Depending on the student's experience, I will assess certain key skills to identify possible recurring deficiencies and nip them in the bud. No two students have the same needs: for instance, one student may be very confident in speaking but have poor grammar; another may know the most obscure uses of the subjunctive but feel too shy to speak spontaneously. In the former case, going back to basics on grammatical concepts and gradually building up knowledge would work best; in the latter, training the student to think on their feet by completing oral exercises in the target language might yield results. I will tailor my teaching to the student's needs while keeping to the specification of the exam they are working towards if applicable.
Many students who come to me are scared of making mistakes and lack confidence or enthusiasm as a result. I try to create an encouraging but academically rigorous atmosphere to combat this. I would much rather a student worked out the correct answer themselves than I simply gave it to them: that way, they have the satisfaction of solving a difficult problem and they are more likely to remember.
Learning a language (even if it is just for GCSE/A Level) is about so much more than just grammar and vocabulary. Where possible, and depending on the level of the student, I will introduce cultural material (especially literature, history and current affairs) into my teaching. I will not hesitate to teach in the target language if it is beneficial. Some A level students may need help with essay-writing on top of traditional language work — given that 75%+ of my university workload consists of writing about French and German literature, I would be delighted to help.
The typical scheme of lessons is one hour a week but this is by no means fixed. I will set work when I deem it necessary. Where possible I will try to avoid going through homework with the student as this inhibits progress (unless the homework has already been marked). Should the student need help with topics covered in the homework, I will provide my own material to bring them up to speed.
