About Andrew
Hello! I'm Andrew, and I'm a violinist based in London, originally from Glasgow.
I hold a Masters degree in Violin Performance (with Distinction) from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), and a Bachelors degree in Music (with First Class Honours) from the University of Edinburgh. I am a Violin Fellow with Southbank Sinfonia for the 2023/24 season, and have performed professionally with Manchester Camerata, Collegium Musicum 90, Manchester Concert Orchestra, Northern Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Baroque, amongst others. I am also an experienced arranger, having written for several pop/indie bands and the RNCM Session Orchestra.
Besides teaching privately for over 6 years, I have worked in several music schools, and represented the Benedetti Foundation as a Lead Ambassador. During my postgraduate studies, I also undertook a research project in a local primary school, developing musicianship in beginner violinists through Kodály and Dalcroze techniques.
I am a passionate musician with experience in a range of styles, and I want to share my love of music with you!

I offer violin and music theory lessons, from absolute beginner to Grade 8 and beyond.
I believe that being an inspirational teacher means shaping one’s approach to each student, building their self-confidence, and sparking an intuitive interest in the subject. This is why I always teach with the student's aims and interests in mind, discovering the approaches that work for each individual to bring out the best in them.
With over 6 years of experience teaching students aged 6 to 60, I can adapt to teach a variety of musical styles, from classical through to pop and folk, for all ages and stages of development. I always bring a smile to my lessons, and believe that effective music education should emphasise compassion and trust. Just let me know where you are in your journey, where you'd like to be, and let's work together to get you there!
As a violin teacher, I want each student's playing to be supported and informed by strong foundations in musicianship. I will help you to UNDERSTAND scale construction and harmony, and the ways that these work in the music you learn. No more learning scales by rote with no end goal in sight! I will work consistently with you on your technique, but prefer to think of removing barriers to achieve a relaxed and natural style of playing, instead of constantly adding on a hundred things for you to think about. Good technique means finding the path of least resistance!
As a theory teacher, I always demonstrate and illustrate using REAL musical examples. Too often, music theory can be abstracted to the point where it pays no attention to historical style and convention, rendering it basically meaningless! Referring to scores, recordings and through demonstrations, I want you to understand the way that music works in the real world. Whether you want to improve your reading skills, understand the chord progressions in your favourite songs, pass an ABRSM exam or write a fugue, I'm here to show you that theory can be fun and rewarding!

Andrew is the best and most patient music teacher I have had. His passion for the violin comes through in his teaching and he inspires a love not just for playing the instrument, but for music as a whole and made me excited to practice. He has a creative and engaging teaching style that felt very personalised to my way of learning and that allowed me to make consistent and steady progress in a way that suited me. He's very friendly and made me feel very comfortable and safe to make mistakes. Lessons are just fun - couldn't recommend enough.
Andrew provided me with harmony and counterpoint tutoring in my final year of school. He was knowledgeable, engaging and friendly. We began with Baroque four-part harmony and Renaissance counterpoint, gradually working through both to an advanced level. We then moved on to the stylistic composition of later periods – all of which built on the foundations set with the earlier material. The work we did over the year was invaluable for the Harmony and Counterpoint modules in the first year of my university Music degree – all of which I would have struggled with if it weren’t for his help. The work was at the right level – challenging, without being overly so, and manageable alongside schoolwork and other extra-curricular commitments. I am exceedingly grateful for the help Andrew gave, and would recommend him to anyone else in a similar situation!
