About Amy
I started tutoring as a way to earn a little extra money towards rent and groceries the summer between the first and second years of my BA at King's College London, all the way back in 2018. I'd worked with young children nearly all my life, having taken a slightly roundabout path to university, but I quickly found I loved working one-on-one with young people, too. I found students of all abilities to be insightful and curious - given enough encouragement!
Since then, I've graduated with a First from KCL, gained a Master's with Distinction from Durham University, and am currently approaching the end of my PhD at Durham as well. I also had the opportunity to do a little seminar teaching in 2024-2025, working with first-year undergraduates, which was thoroughly enjoyable!
My university education has been in the Theology department, but I've tutored in English since the beginning: in fact, it's been my bread-and-butter. I've worked especially with many students retaking the English Language GCSE: it's a frustratingly difficult exam for many students to pass, especially given it's forced upon them. I'm happy to report, however, that I've seen much success in students with targeted work.
I work with GCSE students on both the Language and Literature qualifications and with A Level English Literature students. I've incorporated my love of literature into my academic work in many ways and so have thoroughly enjoyed working with A Level students to delve thoroughly into works of literature! However, at A Level English Language is more focused on linguistics and as such, as much as it pains me, I do not have the expertise for these qualifications.
I am currently getting back into tutoring after taking a couple of years to focus on my PhD, and I'm thoroughly enjoying getting to meet some new students and flex my teaching muscles again! I'd love to hear from you if you think I'd be a good fit to work with you or your child in their studies.

Teaching English at GCSE will inevitably vary depending on if we are working on the Language or Literature qualifications. English Language GCSE unfortunately has to be very exam-focused, but the good news is that I now have nearly endless resources to equip students for these papers! Depending on your confidence, how much preparation you've already done and your target grade, we'll move with appropriate speed through:
- skills-based practice like picking out techniques to analyse or use in creative writing
- learning to write in ways that target the mark scheme
- timed practices to prepare for the real exams.
English Literature is usually more fun! I tend to make Lit lessons text based, so we'll work on the texts the school has picked out in a bit more detail together in a collaborative way - I'll ask students what they think about a passage, or encourage discussion together. Of course, we'll also do plenty of exam preparation too - come up with strategies that work for you for essay-style questions and work on maximising marks for the individual exam board.
