About Alex
I’m a tutor and academic with a PhD in English Literature and over nine years’ teaching experience. I’ve worked with students from aged 9 to an undergraduate level, helping them grow in confidence and achieve their goals. My teaching draws on pedagogical research and focuses on developing metacognitive study skills—encouraging students to think about how they learn, not just what they learn. I care deeply about student wellbeing (I'm actually writing a book on happiness) and aim to create a calm, supportive space where learning can thrive.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, running, and learning foreign languages.

I’m an experienced and qualified tutor with 1500+ hours of English literature teaching (ages 9–undergraduate), alongside 500+ hours of History (11+ to GCSE), and 100+ hours of RE (11+ to A-level). I’ve successfully prepared students for 11+, 13+, and 16+ entrance exams, helping them gain places at top schools including Eton, Winchester, and Cheltenham Ladies’ College.
My teaching is grounded in a constructivist philosophy: I help students actively build knowledge, develop assessment literacy, and grow into confident, reflective thinkers. I emphasise active learning, drawing on educational theory to help students think critically, deepen understanding, and retain knowledge more effectively.
