About Thomas

I graduated with honors from the China-Japan Master's degree at the University of Liège, Belgium, where I received training in languages as well as in history, society and civilization in order to understand Chinese civilization as broadly as possible. I am currently preparing a doctoral thesis in Chinese Studies under the supervision of Professor Eric Florence, a specialist in contemporary China.

I always found that native Mandarin teachers, as good as they were, couldn't always understand the difficulties we faced as non-native speakers when faced with such a different language. This is why I wanted to teach myself, especially to beginners, the Chinese language adapted to non-native speakers.

Apart from that, I'm a pretty chill guy :D I'm against any ultra-coercive pedagogy (mountain of homework, study by heart, etc.), and I think that we only progress through dialogue and benevolent understanding between teachers and students. :) So for shy people and other anxious like me, I'm in the same boat as you and I know how all that can be a brake on the desire to learn. I will therefore make sure to teach and exchange with you in all benevolence.

About the lesson

As a non-native, I am aware of the difficulties that one can encounter as an English speaker in learning Chinese. Some things that seem to go without saying for natives require clarification for us, and after having realised it, I wish to pass on in turn.

You cannot learn without understanding. Too many Mandarin teachers focus on practicing modern Chinese without teaching the etymology of the characters in order to understand the evolution of such a rich language over time. Understanding the evolution of the language and its characteristics is therefore essential for me in my teaching methods.

In the Chinese language, I think the most important thing is to focus on reading and oral comprehension, as well as oral practice through conversation above all. It is useless to make beginners repeat sentences over and over again, you have to make the language live.

My course is primarily intended for beginners, false beginners and low-intermediate, from HSK 1 to HSK 3 approximately (between 0 and 800 known words). I can also prepare more intensively for HSK exams at the request of students. I can teach face-to-face as well as via webcam.
