About Fotini

I’m Fotini, a native Greek speaker with a lifelong relationship with language, literature and the humanities.

I studied Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Cyprus, with studies extending across Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Greek, Latin, literature, history, philosophy and drama.

Over the years, my professional life has taken me through education, journalism and editing in Cyprus and Australia. I’ve taught children and adults and worked with language in very different settings.

What I enjoy most about teaching is going beyond the answer itself — exploring why language works the way it does, how it developed, and the connections between language, history and culture.

I’m also currently studying Law, continuing what has probably always been a habit of mine: learning, questioning, interpreting and looking at things from more than one angle.

About the lesson

Philosophy becomes much more interesting when it stops being a list of thinkers and theories to memorize.

My lessons focus on understanding the ideas themselves: what questions philosophers were trying to answer, why those questions mattered, how different thinkers responded to one another, and how philosophical ideas connect with history, literature, language and the world around us.

I also teach Greek mythology, not simply as a collection of stories, but through the ideas, beliefs, symbols and cultural world behind the myths. Depending on your interests, we can explore the gods and heroes, individual myths, ancient Greek religion and society, mythology in literature, and the connections between myth and philosophical thought.

Lessons are adapted to the individual. I can work with school or university students who need help understanding course material, preparing for assessments or discussing difficult texts, as well as adults and younger learners who simply want to explore philosophy, mythology or the ancient world.

My academic background is in Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature, with study across Greek language, literature, history and the classical tradition. I am also currently studying Law, another field built around questioning, interpretation, argument and looking at an issue from more than one perspective.

Lessons are usually 60 minutes, but the content and approach depend on your age, level and what you actually want to discover.
Rates vary depending on level and lesson requirements. The advertised rate applies to general philosophy and mythology lessons. VCE and university-level tuition is priced separately.
