Patrick is a respected tutor in our community. He is highly recommended for his commitment and the quality of his lessons. An excellent choice to progress with confidence.
About Patrick
I have been working with my body across a variety of different disciplines and circumstances since childhood.
I did various competitive sports throughout my life with a focus on body conditioning and nutrition.
I have dedicated 4 decades to physical training/education, nutrition, martial arts, yoga, meditation, and other contemplative practices, and I'm the founder of the Baseworks Method.
In 2003, I also founded a movement studio in Tokyo, Japan. The studio served the community in Asia with over 30,000 classes to a collective attendance of 500,000 students. From the start of Covid in the spring of 2020, the studio suspended all daily in-person public teaching and transitioned to a hybrid in-person/virtual/online education model.
I am a teacher, teacher trainer, and personal trainer. I have a personal record of educating over 10,000 students across 30,000 hours in 15 countries since the 90s.
I've trained a wide scope of students ranging from those completely new to any kind of physical training to professional athletes & dancers, health wellness & fitness sector instructors, health care professionals, and medical doctors.
I LOVE teaching and aspire to make my unique expertise and skillset accessible to as many interested people as possible.
I am currently based between Canada, Europe, and Asia and serve long-time students and clients in person and virtually on 6 continents.

As an extension of the Cognitive intelligence (IQ) vs Emotional intelligence (EQ) framework, the method I teach differentiates the so-called Physical intelligence (PQ) (a concept different from Gardner's Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence).
Physical intelligence is the ability to intuitively understand the body (one’s own and the bodies of other people) – read the sensory signals, know how to engage the muscles, intuitively understand the biomechanics, effortlessly maintain good posture and learn new movement skills.
A person with low PQ may be described as uncoordinated, or “disembodied”, or having a “low body awareness”, often does not feel 100% comfortable and satisfied with their body, and struggles in popular exercise/movement classes (which often demotivates the person from continuing).
Based on my athletic, teaching, and other experience, I developed the Baseworks Method, a holistic movement practice designed to uniquely address the PQ (Physical intelligence).
The method is based on making anyone aware of the physical, psychological, sensory, and cognitive limitations unique to each individual and guiding them through a step-by-step process of working around these limitations. The method works through interrupting unconscious motor programs, redefining the movement task goals. Basically, it makes you aware of what your brain unconsciously tells your muscles to do.
The lessons I offer may have a different focus depending on your background and needs.
For beginners:
You will be able to:
- Develop strength, flexibility, and mobility.
- Learn to control the muscles based on understanding neuromuscular mechanisms that facilitate comfortable painless stretching that leads to quicker gains in flexibility.
- Develop balance and dexterity.
- Develop sensory awareness – being able to sense the body in a higher resolution.
- Learn to understand your personal condition and limitations
Learn to better understand how to use your body so it will be easier to learn any movement skill.
- Gain an intuitive understanding of the imbalances in your body, which will help to improve your posture, gait, and running, and relieve some chronic pain.
- Gain a better understanding of when to push and when to rest – an invaluable skill to read your stress/fatigue level that tremendously improves the quality of life and productivity.
- Improve attention, visuospatial reasoning, and concentration.
- Increase self-esteem.
- Improve emotional regulation, sleep
and more.
(See the video of some of our long-time students in Tokyo talking about their experience at the bottom of the description)
For movement professionals:
If you are an athlete/dancer/martial artist/experienced yoga practitioner/etc, or you are teaching any movement modality, you could:
- Make use of a holistic conditioning movement practice that addresses the entire body.
- Improve explicit understanding of the body (movement professionals may be skilled in movement without explicit awareness).
- Address types of training that you are missing in your native discipline.
- Pick up some tips you could use in your teaching practice.
For doctors/physiotherapists/healthcare practitioners:
You could learn a new approach to empower your clients to approach exercise, regain mobility, and become healthier physically and psychologically.
The sessions can be one-on-one or in small groups (generally, no more than 6 people).
The sessions are open to anyone at any level of fitness, including the aging population and those with chronic injuries/recovering from an acute injury.

Patrick is a great movement teacher who can offer something to both complete beginners and experienced movement practitioners.
In his sessions, Patrick redefines both physical education and what it means to be a teacher. Sessions with him are often so full of humor and stand-up comedy that you feel better just from that alone. No two sessions led by him are ever the same.
He has a profound grasp of every student's immediate physical and mental condition and needs and provides deeply personalized guidance and support.
As a trainer, Patrick knows how to bring you from point A to point B, then to point C, and so on. And at the same time, he also makes you realize that the alphabet of physical development is infinite and non-linear. Training with him makes you more accepting of your current level and state – which is an indispensable skill/mental quality in the fast-paced competitive world most of us live in. He also helps clarify the steps to progress and define realistically attainable and sustainable goals so you can actually feel the progress.
His views on "limitations" and how to approach them are truly revolutionary in the current health & fitness industry climate, and a lot of what he teaches transcends the boundaries of physical fitness.
Patrick is extremely kind, and, both as a teacher and an entrepreneur, he is really committed to helping people. And in a situation where he knows more than you about what you actually need, he usually does not give up when at first, you cannot understand why you need what he is trying to give you. This is a unique quality that people make movies about, and that you will not typically find in your average fitness instructor. Patrick is an inexhaustible source of energy, inspiration, and learning. And one can only hope to meet an instructor like him in their lifetime.
Patrick is among the most creative and lateral-thinking people I have ever met. From the perspective of systems design, his method is pure beauty. It is both a physical and intellectual pleasure to explore his method.
Also, Patrick has an excellent aesthetic / design scene. And I know some people may think – why is this even important for a "fitness trainer." But as a neuroscientist really interested in the relationship between motor and non-motor functions, I find that such a question itself highlights that most fitness/exercise systems are only targeting the muscles doing very little to one's perception, undermining the true potential of what one can get from a physical practice. In Patrick's reality, and in the reality of those who have consistently practiced with him, the physicality of movement, the altered perception of space developed from the physical practice, spills into how one sees spatial relationships between objects and, put simply, improves one's design skills as well.
I could literally write a collection of essays about Patrick, but perhaps it's better for anyone interested in better understanding their body just to go and try his sessions to see for themselves. As a movement educator, Patrick excels in his ability to teach/guide from a place of compassionate understanding of each individual practitioner, with long term sustainability in mind.
His excellence stems from an exquisite combination of dedication in working on the self (from physical, mental, to psychological), experimenting all facets of modalities in relation to this, unbiased genuine curiosity for everything, astonishing humbleness and resilience to challenge, deep empathy that comes from a place of love for learning, combined with relentless stamina to not give up.
Sessions with him are often an eclectic combination of shedding light to what intuitively makes sense yet somehow we have lost touch with, together with new insightful concepts based on current scientific research, full of perception shifting ideas, inviting the practitioner to enthusiastically challenge their capacity in all facets of life.
Having him as a teacher, mentor, guide has and continues to leave me with multiple layers of ripple effect that extends beyond the physical.View more recommendations
