About Bruno

For me, teaching French is about inspiring students to engage with the language in a way that is meaningful, enjoyable, and connected to their lives. I emphasise a communicative approach that encourages learners to speak, listen, read, and write through practical, authentic tasks like interviews, storytelling, and project-based learning. Grammar is introduced through use and discovery rather than memorisation, with students learning to navigate verb tenses, syntax, and vocabulary in context. Culture is an integral part of my teaching—I introduce students to francophone traditions, literature, music, and current issues to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the language as a living cultural phenomenon. I make use of multimedia tools and digital resources to enrich lessons, promote vocabulary retention, and support diverse learning styles. A highlight in my teaching was mentoring a student to produce a bilingual travel guide, which combined language skills with cultural exploration and creativity. Above all, I aim to create a welcoming, motivating environment where students build confidence and a genuine passion for French that extends far beyond the classroom.

About the lesson

Teaching French effectively requires combining structured grammar lessons with dynamic, communicative practice that reflects authentic language use. I begin by clearly explaining foundational grammar elements—verb tenses, gender and agreement, negation, pronouns, and sentence construction—presented in logical, digestible steps to build student confidence. However, grammar instruction is always paired with meaningful application: students immediately use new structures in conversations, role-playing typical daily interactions such as ordering meals or discussing plans, and written tasks that simulate real communication. This method helps learners see grammar as a functional tool rather than mere rules. Lessons are interactive and student-focused, encouraging description of images, storytelling, and expression of ideas to naturally embed vocabulary and grammatical structures. Visual aids and recognition of linguistic patterns aid comprehension, while frequent review sessions ensure material is retained and confidence grows. Cultural exposure enriches lessons by integrating French films, music, literature, and celebrations, connecting language learning to real-world context. A particularly rewarding moment was assisting a student who struggled with French literature; through patient explanation and consistent practice, they developed both skills and enthusiasm. I also leverage technology—interactive quizzes, listening apps, and personalised homework assignments—to foster independent learning and provide tailored feedback. My ultimate aim is to make French enjoyable, logical, and accessible, equipping students to communicate fluently and appreciate the francophone world.
