About Bethany

I am a PGCE Primary trainee teacher (ages 5–11) at the University of Brighton with experience teaching mainly in Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2. I am passionate about helping children grow through supportive 1:1 teaching where I can really see their progress. My aim is to make learning engaging, structured, and enjoyable.

I believe every child deserves to feel confident and successful in their learning, and I bring this approach into all of my teaching.

About the lesson

In my English lessons, there are five focus groups to support pupil progress:

Reading
To build fluency, comprehension skills, and vocabulary. After reading a section of the text, I use VIPERS to develop a deeper understanding.

Writing
This includes sentence structure, grammar and a focus on neat handwriting. I use scaffolds to support learning and gradually build independence.

Spelling
I teach through segmenting, blending sounds and exploring word families. Repetition and spelling games are a vital part of my lessons.

Phonics
I use sound buttons alongside explicit teaching of digraphs, trigraphs, and split digraphs, and recognising tricky words.

Punctuation
My style involves a visit from the “Punctuation Police” to support self-correction and to reinforce correct usage over time.

These lessons typically last 45 minutes. They are structured to start with retrieval, discussion time, modelling of the task, guided practice, and finally, a formative assessment to check progress. My aim is to be adaptive to your needs, foster a warm and supportive environment, and show that you can do it.
