About Huizi

Dr. Huizi Wang is a dedicated percussionist and pianist with a Doctorate in Percussion from McGill University. With extensive experience as an instructor, Huizi specializes in teaching percussion, drum set, and piano to students of all levels. By integrating innovative methodologies, including Tai Chi Chuan-based memorization techniques, Huizi fosters a unique and effective learning environment that enhances students' technical proficiency, musicality, and confidence. Passionate about both performance and education, Huizi has worked with individuals and ensembles in diverse musical settings, offering structured yet creative guidance tailored to each student's goals. Beyond teaching, Huizi is an accomplished performer, having collaborated with orchestras, chamber ensembles, and contemporary music projects. Huizi Wang’s Unique Piano Teaching Methodology

My approach to piano instruction goes beyond simply learning notes and fingerings—I focus on developing a deep musical understanding, physical ease, and personal expression in every student. With a background in both percussion and piano, I bring a unique perspective to rhythm, touch, and musicality, ensuring that students develop a well-rounded technique from the very first lesson. I also incorporate Tai Chi Chuan-based body awareness techniques, helping students release tension, improve fluidity, and play with greater control and expression.

What to Expect in a Typical Lesson Each lesson is tailored to the student's level and goals, but a typical session includes:
Warm-up & Technique Development – Scales, finger exercises, and relaxation techniques to build strength, agility, and confidence.
Sight-Reading & Ear Training – Developing fluency in reading music and recognizing patterns by ear for a more intuitive playing experience. Repertoire Exploration – Learning pieces suited to the student’s interests, with guidance on phrasing, dynamics, and interpretation.
Rhythmic Awareness & Coordination – Unique insights from my percussion background to help students develop precision and rhythmic accuracy.
Music Theory & Improvisation – Understanding the structure behind the music to enhance creativity and self-expression.
