About Charles

I am a music educator with a Master's in composition and jazz performance who has taught at several New England universities and private schools for over 40 years. I am still active in my local music community and many of my students have gone on to professional careers in music.

About the lesson

I give instruction in beginning and intermediate saxophone, clarinet, flute and jazz piano can draw on a traditional classical approach or work from a less formal jazz pedagogy for students of all ages. I help students develop an effective practice routine, proper tone production, and technical facility in addition to effective sight reading, rhythmic accuracy and stylistic interpretation skills.

Danny is definitely off to a good start on his saxophone journey. He has control of his sound and reads and counts well for his age and experience level, so we have immediately been able to start addressing musical concerns and not spend too much time on technical matters.

Milly really just wanted a better understanding of the use of clarinet in her composition for class. She's not interested in taking actual lessons on the instrument.

Excellent! Charles was very helpful but my internet connection was bad and we could not conduct the lesson as we expected. Charles has rescheduled my lesson so that I can get a better internet connection.

Rickey and Lulu are a winning combination! She already gets a good characteristic sound on the saxophone and is working diligently to learn to read music. Rickey has some musical experience and helps translate what information I am giving in the lesson. We are working as a team to make sure Lulu continues her good progress!

Dr. Kosoglanian is really enthusiastic about his saxophone playing and practiced consistently for the lesson this week. His counting skills are strong and he supports the tone well; as his embouchure gets stronger and his articulation skills improve, he is going to sound great!

Charlie Jennison was my saxophone instructor at Phillips Exeter from 2007-2009. He guided me as a complete novice to the instrument in the fundamentals, and helped me develop comfort with playing. While I have not played in many years (and regret not continuing!), I am very grateful for his instruction and the life lessons learned through playing the alto sax. I highly recommend him as a trustworthy instructor. Thanks Mr. Jennison!
