  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Being a native speaker and an English teacher at the same time, allows me to be aware of all levels of Albanian and English grammar and vocabulary. I speak Albanian everyday with my family, colleagues and friends, which allows me to practice and be fluent in Albanian language.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

From the most famous nun of all time to well known actors, the world has known plenty of famous Albanians and people with Albanian roots. But, If I asked myself this question, I would definitely choose Mother Teresa (Nënë Tereza). Her real name was Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu and was born in Skopje (Macedonia). Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of charity and helped people with aids, as well as children. Mother Teresa received a number of honours, including the Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize (1962) and Nobel Prize (1979).
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

Albanian language sometimes might sound so funny and unique at the same time. There are a lot of phrases that cannot even be explained in English. An example might be; " Të bësh një vrimë në ujë". This phrase is usually said to an useless person who can't do anything. If we try to translate this phrase in English it might be; "To make a hole in water".
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

As we all know, language has a magical influence on the lives we lead, with an impact on our thoughts, emotions and actions. When expressing those thoughts and emotions in Albanian, the feeling is different. Speaking Albanian feels like home and we always feel connected with our home. Not me, but everyone feels a special bond with all those who speak the same language.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty in learning Albanian is related with the verbs and nouns. Albanian verbs can be tricky sometimes because they have stems that you need to add an ending to as you form sentences. Memorizing all of the endings might be one of the most challenging part of learning Albanian. On the other hand, nouns are also tricky because they have genders and each gendered noun follows specific rules. You will have to memorize the gender of each noun as you learn vocabulary.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

In my early years at school, my teachers always used to say the word 'kismet' for everything. We asked them If we could play tomorrow and they just used to say kismet. When I came home, I asked my mum If we could go for a walk and she also used the word kismet. I asked my teacher what did that mean, but I was not able to understand the definition of that word. Later on, I realised that kismet was 'maybe' or 'let's see'. Even this day kismet is not one of my favourite words.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Having a chance to visit different places in Albania (South/North), has helped me a lot to understand different dialects. When I travel, I always make sure to speak as the people there do. I am all the time curious for each dialect being used. Also, my parents are from Dibra(North of Albania) and this helped me to teach both dialects. Geg, Tosk and Standard Albanian.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Since I have studied English and Albanian language at university, allows me to be aware of all levels of English and Albanian language. It is not that I am just a native speaker who speaks the language, but I have studied for it. Also, being a licensed English teacher helps me a lot to be updated with the new vocabulary and new methods used while teaching.
