About Myfanwy

My career combines performing and teaching.

As a performer, I have held two principal oboe positions so far; at the Alba Regia Symphony Orchestra in Hungary and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. In addition, I regularly perform as principal oboe with the Chineke! Orchestra. As a guest principal, I have also enjoyed performing with other orchestras such as the Britten Sinfonia and Irish National Opera. Highlights of my chamber music - making have included performing at the Wigmore Hall with the Chineke! wind quintet, which included playing Silvestrini as a soloist.

Alongside this, I have enjoyed teaching the oboe privately to students with a wide range of abilities, from complete beginners to conservatoire level. I have also given masterclasses to conservatoire students, both in South Africa and Ireland. As a teacher, I try to accommodate the needs of each individual, and can help them learn for pleasure, exam preparation and youth orchestras/ conservatoire entrance auditions.

My significant professional performance experience gives me the necessary skills to help students to reach excellent standards of playing. Having regularly sat on audition panels, I also feel that I would be well placed to advise on how to perform well in auditions for any sort of youth/amateur orchestra or festival. It is always a pleasure to pass on my passion for music to others.

About the lesson

I'm a friendly and patient teacher and tailor my approach to each individual's needs. I can teach children and adults, from complete beginner to conservatoire level. I am able to prepare students for ABRSM /Trinity exams, conservatoire entrance exams, youth/amateur orchestra repertoire and reedmaking. For those who want a more relaxed approach, we can cover the foundations but spend plenty of time learning repertoire that is fun for you.
