About Sergio
I'm Sergio, and yes — I teach the violin. And yes, I spend a lot of time convincing people it's not as terrifying as they think it is.
To be fair, the reputation isn't completely wrong. The violin is demanding. It takes real time and real consistency. The first few months in particular can test your patience in ways most instruments don't. I'm not going to pretend otherwise because I think honesty matters more than a good sales pitch.
What I will push back on is the idea that it has to feel as hard as it usually does. Because most of that difficulty isn't the instrument — it's the teaching. Specifically, it's the mismatch between how violin has traditionally been taught and how people actually absorb new physical and musical information.
I figured this out the hard way, through years of teaching and watching what worked and what didn't. And what kept working — consistently, across students of completely different ages and starting points — was going visual. Showing rather than describing. Making the mechanics of the instrument something a student could actually see and understand, not just feel their way toward through trial and error.
Pair that with a lesson structure that feels rewarding rather than punishing, and the whole experience of learning the violin changes. I've seen it happen enough times now that it stopped surprising me. It still makes me happy though, every single time.

The violin makes a lot more sense when you can see what's happening.
That's not a complicated idea but the implications of it are significant. Bow arm mechanics stop being mysterious when they're broken down visually into positions and shapes your brain can instantly recognize. Left hand placement becomes obvious when the geometry of it is shown clearly rather than described vaguely. Intonation — genuinely one of the trickiest things about the instrument — becomes far more manageable when students have something visual to anchor to rather than just being told to listen harder.
Beyond the visual side of things, lessons are built to feel like progress the whole way through. There are always clear goals — small enough to be reachable, meaningful enough to actually care about. Students leave sessions knowing specifically what improved and specifically what they're working on next. No vague homework. No wondering whether anything is actually moving.
The violin is worth every bit of effort it asks for. My job is just to make sure that effort always feels like it's going somewhere — and honestly, to make sure it's a lot more enjoyable than people expect it to be.
