About Maria
I began my career as a private tutor in 1996, while I was still a high school student! Since then, I have tutored over 2,000 students ranging in age from 7 years old to adults! I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Hunter College of the City University of New York, and my teaching license from Greensboro College and the University of Phoenix. I am currently a dual-licensed ESL/Spanish teacher, working in a small urban high school. I am passionate about helping all of my students feel successful and learn to love and have fun with the English language in all aspects; reading, writing, understanding, and speaking!

First and foremost, I approach every lesson with enthusiasm and energy! I quickly assess my students' language needs and tailor the lesson to best meet those specific needs. I employ a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic approaches. I am a firm believer in direct instruction, modeling, and gradual release, and incorporate discussion and dialogue to a high degree in my lessons.
