About Cameron

My decision to study psychology was born of a fascination with the subject, with understanding the processes that contribute to human behaviour. I’m no less passionate about the subject today, regularly seeking out new research and ideas being developed within the field.

After graduating in 2016 I went on to work in the emergency services. My years of experience in this area has given me a great deal of insight into the world of mental health, and I regularly apply the theory and understanding developed through my degree to those situations I encounter in my professional life - both in order to better understand the actions and behaviours of the people I come into contact with and to inform my own decisions.

Over the years I have found a great deal of satisfaction in passing the knowledge I have developed on to others through informal tutoring, hence my decision to start offering tutoring sessions on a more formal basis alongside my shifts in the emergency services.

About the lesson

I try to apply core psychological principles to allow effective learning and understanding of key theories and concepts that underpin the subject, minimising the need for inefficient rote-learning. I take a patient approach, adapting the pace of lessons to the needs of the student, providing the space and time within which they can challenge their own understanding and ask the questions they might not otherwise be able to ask.

In addition to teaching the core subject material I also aim to help students to develop essential transferable skills, such as critical thinking and communication, through discussion of what is still a very young and developing field. The main research methods and common data analysis concepts utilised in many different studies is also something I aim to develop a good understanding of in all students.

Tutoring is very much a two-way process that requires engagement on both sides in order to be effective. Lesson lengths can be varied to suit the learner - some will benefit from regular 1-2hr sessions, others may only need shorter or less frequent lessons. Where a more “one-off” session is desired I will need the student to come prepared with a good understanding of what they want to get out of the session, including the areas they wish to cover. Otherwise, where a more long term arrangement is preferable, the first session is free in order to allow time to discuss this in sufficient detail.
