About Joe
I have been a Superprof tutor for a few years now focusing on teaching Spanish to adults. I have a separate ad for those classes ("Jumpstart your Spanish fluency journey with a translator of poetry and longtime educator"). I love working with people one-on-one so I can customize my lessons around each individual learner. In addition to tutoring, I was a full-time classroom teacher of 3rd graders in a public school in East Oakland for 12 years. I've also taught multiple subjects to middle school students at various private schools in the East Bay. I especially love working with adults as I find it is invigorating to learn new things later in life outside of a school setting. Poetry has been a lifelong companion. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing: Poetry from Saint Mary's College of CA where in 2020 I had the privilege of working with some amazing contemporary poets such as Matthew Zapruder and Ada Limón. I'm excited to share with you what I've learned along the way.

There are several ways we can proceed.
1. We read your poems and name aspects such as form, technique, line length, and more. We find other model poems with some similarities. We see how these poems are working. We decide if you would like to make revisions and discuss possible ways to move forward. We discuss how to know when something is finished. We look into where to submit and how, if that interests you.
2. Perhaps you're not interested in writing poems but want to read and discuss great poetry. I can guide you in discovering great poems or work that challenges you and makes you think and feel. I find that reading poetry regularly helps me form a different sort of attention with which to engage with daily life. Classes can be like a poetry appreciation course where we study a variety of poems and poets. Rilke, Lorca, Whitman, Ginsberg... Ada Limon, Mark Strand, Mary Oliver, Arthur Sze, Audre Lorde, Dorothea Lasky, and so many more. Poetry is as varied as music. We can sort out what we like and dislike and what makes a poem great!
3. We can use our time like it's a poetry workshop where I give you writing prompts and help you generate a writing practice. I can assign homework with texts to read about making poems, as well as model poems to emulate or learn from.
4. The art of translation. I have published a few of my translations of Spanish language poetry. The process is like a hybrid of doing a cross-word puzzle and writing a poem. It forces you to become a close reader and can result in gaining an intense appreciation for the original poem while bringing about a new beautiful creation. We can simply study poems already translated and enjoy the nuances between the two versions. Or we can do our own translations.

Joe is a patient and creative teacher who is able to meet you at whatever level or learning style and help you progress. I took Spanish with him and he made it fun but the classes also had real structure and goals set out. I liked the balance between traditional learning, and fun, creative projects and “homework”, that played to my strengths and interests. I highly recommend Joe!
Joe was so great in accurately assessing my level of Spanish (some high school and spotty for many years) and working with me to create the lesson plan that would be best for both my level of knowledge and also what would push me into being able to be more conversational. Joe was able to move me beyond beginning Spanish and focused on some important concepts that helped me advance my understanding of the language so much farther than I ever got on my own! He also provided a ton of resources I could use outside our lessons so that I could get fully immersed and our lessons became even more effective. I would absolutely recommend Joe as a teacher for anyone from beginner to advanced because he will be able to create the perfect lesson plan catered to you and accommodate your Spanish speaking goals!
I wanted to learn Spanish again after a 20-year hiatus and Joe, in just 2 months, reignited my love for the language. I’ve known Joe for years and have always admired his delight in learning and sharing with others. He creates a relaxed, student-centered environment for Spanish learners and makes having fun a priority. He identifies weaknesses without shame and embraces mistakes. His dexterity in teaching both young people and adults is outstanding. Whether you are new to Spanish or a returning student, Joe will help you comprehend and speak Spanish in no time!
I took virtual classes with Joe during the pandemic. He was extremely patient and would stop to answer questions for anyone who was confused. The classes were for beginning Spanish speakers. Some of us had prior Spanish language classes and few of didn't. Somehow Joe was able to keep the class at a relevant pace for everyone despite their varying levels. We spent enough time speaking and practicing written Spanish in the hour long class. A nice touch was the breakout rooms that he set up during the class so that you had the opportunity to try a few lessons with another student.
I thoroughly enjoyed Joe's class and would highly recommend his course for any level Spanish student.Joe helped me to understand the difference between ser and estar, and now I am way more confident when I speak Spanish!
Also between saber, conocer y intender too. Joe can untangle the mess of a foreign language so that it becomes rigging, so you can climb around on it while sailing the seven seas talking to whoever you want to!View more recommendations
