About Mario

I'm a PhD researcher at the University of Exeter working on novel applications of AI and computer vision to marine ecology and conservation. My day-to-day involves exactly the kind of work I tutor: building and training deep learning models, developing computer vision pipelines, wrangling large datasets in Python, and turning research code into tools that other scientists can actually use.

Before starting my PhD I spent several years developing software and data analysis pipelines for marine research, including object detection systems for underwater video, stereo computer vision applications, and machine learning workflows running on both local GPU workstations and HPC clusters. I've worked through most of the practical headaches that catch people out - environment setup, CUDA configuration, multiprocessing, debugging models that won't train - and I enjoy helping others avoid the same dead ends.

Outside of research I spend most of my free time outdoors - hiking, climbing, running, and exploring the Devon and Cornish coast.

About the lesson

My lessons are aimed at undergraduate and Masters students learning Python for coursework or projects, PhD researchers applying machine learning to their own data, and professionals or career-changers wanting to learn applied ML and computer vision properly rather than copy-pasting from tutorials.

I take a project-first approach: rather than abstract exercises, we work on real problems - ideally yours. Whether that's a coursework assignment, a research dataset, an image classification task, or a portfolio project, my job is to make sure you understand what each piece of code is doing and why. We cover the fundamentals as they become relevant, so the theory sticks because you've just used it.

Topics I regularly teach include core Python and the scientific stack (numpy, pandas, matplotlib), classical machine learning with scikit-learn, deep learning with PyTorch, computer vision (CNNs, object detection, working with image and video data), and the practical engineering side that tutorials often skip - environment setup, debugging, version control, and getting code to actually run on your machine or a GPU.

Lessons usually run for one hour, with longer two-hour sessions available for tackling specific projects end-to-end. I work remotely via video call with screen sharing, which suits live coding well, and I'm happy to review code or notebooks between sessions when that helps progress.
