  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

French is my native language, so it's a part of me. But Spanish and English were both inspired by wonderful teachers who made me fall in love with learning languages. Arabic was a different story-I picked it up through immersion and curiosity, driven by a fascination with the culture and language itself.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For French, I'd say Grand Corps Malade. He's a modern poet whose mastery of the language amazes me. Through his words, he captures the beauty and complexity of French while tackling important societal issues. He beautifully shows how powerful language can be in expressing what matters most.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite French traditions is le goûter. This afternoon snack is a cherished ritual for kids and adults alike, usually around 4 p.m. It's a moment to pause and enjoy something sweet, my favourite is a brioche with chocolate. Le goûter is a little daily pleasure that gives rhythm to the afternoon and reflects the French appreciation for savoring life's small moments.

In Arabic, I find the tradition of the zaghrita fascinating. It's a high-pitched, trilling sound made by women during celebrations like weddings, graduations, and other joyful occasions. The zaghritaexpresses excitement, pride, and happiness, bringing energy and spirit to gatherings. I love how it embodies the lively, expressive nature of Arabic culture and shows how emotions are shared openly and joyfully in these communities.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking each of these languages matters to me because it opens doors to different worlds. Through French, I connect to my roots and the rich heritage of my country, but also dozens of other countries around the world.

Spanish allows me to engage with an entire community of speakers across many cultures around the world.

Arabic has given me insight into a rich, diverse region and culture.

Each of these languages has shaped my life in some way and helped me connect deeply with others, but also opened doors to other languages: I am able to understand some Italian, Portuguese, and even some Turkish thanks to the languages I speak.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

In French, the biggest hurdles are often pronunciation and the many verb conjugations. French has sounds that can be hard for non-native speakers, and the grammar can feel overwhelming with all the tenses and agreements.

In Spanish, I would say the main challenge is the vocabulary and speed. Spanish also has a lot of verb tenses, which can be tricky to keep straight.

With Arabic, the script and pronunciation are definitely the most difficult to tackle

the challenges because they are so different from what we know in English.

For all languages, the best solution to tackle all difficulties is lots of practice, and immersing yourself in the language, whether it is watching something in the language, listening to music, reading or taking part in conversations.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

My first trip abroad was a day trip to London when I was 13. I didn't really need to ask for directions, but I was so excited to be in an English-speaking country that I asked people where I could find a fish and chips restaurant, just for the thrill of speaking in English! It made me even more excited when I realised that people actually understood me. That small experience showed me how language can open doors and gave me a huge boost of confidence. It's a memory that still reminds me of the joy of connecting with others through language.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

One memorable trip was to a museum in northern Spain, where our guide showed us artifacts from the period when Spain was part of the Islamic Empire. One coat had Arabic writing on it, and when the guide said she wasn't sure what it meant, I was able to step in and translate. It was a small moment, but it gave me such a boost to see my language studies in action and connect with people in a way I hadn't expected. That experience reinforced just how meaningful learning another language can be-not just for yourself, but for the people you share it with.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

As a Deputy Head of Modern Foreign Languages in my school, and equipped with a Master's degree in teaching foreign languages, I bring both experience and passion to my role. I've worked with students at all levels, preparing them for GCSEs and A-Levels and helping them find confidence in French, Spanish, and Arabic. I have firsthand experience learning languages in all kinds of settings-from formal classes to self-guided study and immersion-and I'm passionate about making grammar clear and approachable for my students. For me, language isn't just about words; it's helped me make friends, discover new cultures, and even find love. I love adapting my lessons to make learning engaging and meaningful, so my students don't just learn the language-they feel empowered to use it. Teaching languages is all about opening doors.
