About Russell
I am a qualified teacher (PGCE 1992) with 34 years' experience of teaching A-level and GCSE sociology in secondary schools and FE colleges. As well as extensive classroom teaching experience, I have tutored online since 2020 (5* reviews can be viewed on 'tutorful').
My first degree was in Sociology, graduating in 1989, therefore my sociology experience covers a near 40 year period. I currently teach part-time in a successful Leeds school, where I was Curriculum Team Leader/Head of Department for 15 years until my semi-retirement in 2023.
I have excellent subject knowledge of AQA sociology (GCSE and A-level), having exclusively taught this specification for 34 years, and I therefore only offer tutoring for AQA. I combine my knowledge with an ability to break sociology down into manageable and accessible ideas. I place great emphasis on the skills needed for success in sociology, such as essay writing and answering shorter mark questions. Crucially, I endeavour to make online lessons dynamic, active and interesting for students.
Alongside my teaching and tutoring, I have recently completed an M.A. in Popular Music and Culture, a course that gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for music and sociology. I am shortly embarking on a PhD, putting the theory of lifelong learning into practice at the age of 59!
I am new to Superprof, although you can view my 5 star reviews on the 'Tutorful' site.

I always aim to engage students by making sociology relevant to their own life experiences where possible. Not surprisingly, an interested student learns more effectively and makes greater progress.
I use a variety of teaching techniques and resources designed to meet the needs of a range of learners. Depending on the specific needs of a student, a typical lesson may involve an explanation and interactive discussion of key sociological concepts/theories, or may involve a step by step breakdown of an exam question. Model answers (for short questions and essays) are regularly used to demonstrate key skills needed for exam success. Particularly when teaching A-level sociology, I also provide students with relevant contemporary material (such as online newspaper articles) as a means to help achieve the highest grades.
A typical lesson lasts for one hour, although this is flexible, depending on the needs of the student.
I consistently help both GCSE and A-level sociology students to achieve excellent grades, including the 2025 A-level and GCSE cohorts.

I have known Russell since university. Later we taught at neighbouring secondary schools in north London. He was extremely generous in supporting some of my students with a project that required technology that his school had but mine didn't. His rapport with the students was excellent. They responded very well to his calm, assured teaching style and impressive subject knowledge. He is now a very experienced teacher, who has maintained a fantastic level of commitment to his subject and his students' progress.
Russell is a brilliant tutor - reliable, kind and patient. His experience, his passion for sociology and his deep subject knowledge shine through in his sessions. He covers everything you need to know but he also has an informal style that will put anyone at ease. He explains things clearly and answers any questions you have thoughtfully. Russell will work hard to help you succeed - I heartily recommend him!
Russell was my tutor for 3.5 years throughout GCSE and A-level sociology. He is an incredible support, providing engaging lessons and adapting to his students needs continuously. I have achieved very good grades, and I believe this is due to his incredible teaching. I could not recommend enough. No matter what level you begin at, Russell will ensure to provide an encouraging environment sharing his passion for the subject and make you fall in love with sociology all the while preparing memorable lessons and insightful conversations. Thank you Russell for all of your support over the years.
