About Marisa

I am a passionate and experienced educator with eight years of teaching experience at both primary and high school levels. My main teaching areas are English and Afrikaans, and I have also taught Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Life Orientation, Creative Arts, Economics and Business Studies. I enjoy working with learners across different stages of their education and adapting my approach to meet their individual needs.

I hold a BCom in Communication Management, an Honors degree in Media Studies, and a Master of Arts in Communication Science, with a focus on conservation. I am qualified with both a PGCE and a TEFL certificate, and I am also a certified copy-editor and proofreader. In addition to teaching, I offer professional support with research and the proofreading and editing of academic texts, including theses and dissertations.

At the heart of my teaching is a strong belief in empowering learners. I am passionate about journeying alongside my students, providing guidance and support as they build confidence, develop independence, and reach their full potential. I believe learning should be an active process, and I strive to create lessons that encourage agency, engagement, and a sense of ownership in the learning journey.

Outside the classroom, I am happiest when I am outdoors in nature, often camping with the bare basics. I share my home with two dogs (a corgi and a German shepherd) and a cat, and I am an avid reader — often juggling several books at once and occasionally mixing up the storylines. I also enjoy gaming, with favorites including Skyrim and The Witcher on PC, and Pokémon on Nintendo. When I’m not teaching, you’ll often find me in my vegetable garden, growing a variety of veggies, enjoying live music, or practicing yoga.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is learner-centred, structured, and adaptable. I focus on building a strong foundational understanding while tailoring lessons to each learner’s pace, needs, and learning style. What sets me apart is my ability to create a supportive, calm learning environment that encourages confidence, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving.

I am proficient in English and Afrikaans, and I teach confidently in both languages.

Students can expect well-organised, engaging lessons that begin with a clear explanation of objectives, followed by guided practice and active participation from learners. Lessons are warm, structured, and flexible, with space for questions, discussion, and reinforcement. I adapt my teaching strategies to ensure concepts are clearly understood, and learning remains engaging and effective.

My lessons are aimed at learners studying Afrikaans Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, and English First Additional Language. I also assist with research, academic writing, and the editing of examinable texts, including theses and dissertations.
