About Kevin

I wasn't always a bright student. I remember dreading to show my parents every report card in elementary school. But I didn't let that stop me from looking for new ways to learn. As I explored different forms of knowledge acquisition, note-taking, and memorization, I discovered what works best for me, and my grades gradually improved.

In addition to ending high school with a 98% average and gaining admission to two of Canada's most competitive undergraduate programs, some of my other academic achievements include:
- Taking the AP Biology/Chemistry exams in grades 9 and 10 (5/5)
- Research project at McMaster Synthetic Biology Club
- Independent research on neuroscience and bioremediation
- President of the Science Club at my school, where I coordinated and led over 50 lessons and labs focused on scientific concepts.
- Acceptance into the Honors Bachelor of Health Sciences program at Queen's University (acceptance rate ~4%), and the Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences Program @McMaster University (acceptance rate ~14%)

My most important takeaway from overcoming these challenges is that learning approaches differ across students and subjects. Therefore, figuring out how we learn best is vital for academic success, and I strive to help each student do just that.

About the lesson

My goal as a tutor is to empower my students to become self-directed learners. I strive to help you strengthen your critical thinking skills and teach you HOW to learn, which leads to long-term success throughout high school courses and beyond.

To achieve this goal, I take a highly individualized approach. I start by working with students to determine their goals, strengths, and weaknesses. My lessons are highly interactive and often include opportunities for students to engage and apply the knowledge they learn through discussions, practice problems, and inquiry-based concepts. Concepts are explained using thorough analogies and examples that suit a range of learning styles (visual, verbal, etc.) My goal is to help you succeed, so I am very flexible and always more than happy to adjust the focus of lessons to meet your needs (e.g., reviewing specific topics before a test, assigning homework, etc.). I'm happy to teach lessons online or in-person at a location that works for you.

My recent experience with the Ontario high school curriculum (having just finished high school) sets me apart as a tutor. I am very familiar with key topics in the curriculum and the learning approaches that work for them, as well as what is needed to do well on tests and assignments. I graduated from high school with a 98% average, including:
- 95% in grade 11/12 English
- 97% in grade 12 biology
- 98% in grade 12 chemistry
- 98% in grade 12 calculus, advanced functions, and data management.

In addition, I have extensive experience tutoring high school students with real results. I am able to modify my teaching approach to ensure that they work for you. Some examples include:
- Tutoring a grade 11 student in advanced functions (mark increased from 78% --> 94%).
- Tutoring a grade 10 student in English (mark increased from 77% --> 91%).
- Tutoring a grade 11 student in biology (mark increased from 84% --> 95%)
