About Joseph
As a tutor, I seek to work for the students, not simply talk in their ears or read notes off of a page. I try to bring an upbeat, fast-paced, and varied style to each lesson. I studied English at Harvard, but I am not the typical stuffy, pretentious type that one might expect from an Ivy League graduate. I try to keep lessons loose and free-flowing to allow for creative or insightful moments to breathe. I enjoy tutoring because I feel that I am able to expand my mind along with those I am tutoring. I began working at a creative writing summer camp called "Bookmaking By-The-Sea" when I was 15, and ever since I have loved tutoring and teaching others about literature and storytelling. I hope to inspire others and imbue a sense of passion about the English language that has motivated me for my entire academic life.

I typically teach middle and high school students, but have worked with younger students in the past as well. I specialize in creative writing and essay writing, but am well-versed in English literature and studies and can even help prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, the ACT, and AP exams. For creative writing, I am experienced in screenwriting and playwriting in addition to fiction, non-fiction, and poetry writing. For essay writing, I often work with students who are working on college essays, but enjoy helping with all forms of expository writing.
With many years of experience and a passion for writing and literature, I help guide students through their studies in a creative, eye-opening manner that never feels like a chore. I set regimented lesson plans that always begin with a warmup and leave room for questions at the end, but I am highly flexible and try to take the lesson in the direction it is naturally heading. As a creative person at heart, I try to find unique readings of texts or different ways to tell a story. I believe everyone should be able to write proficiently, creatively, and honestly.
