I utilize Active Engagement strategies to ensure students aren't just passively receiving information. My key techniques include:
Socratic Discussion: Instead of providing answers, I ask leading questions to help students discover character motivations and themes on their own.
The "Paragraph Shrinking" Method: To master essay structure, we break down complex texts into their most essential ideas, building clarity and precision.
Scaffolded Analysis: I provide frameworks for character analysis that allow students to gradually take the lead as their confidence grows.
A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)
Opening & Rapport (5 mins): A quick check-in on their day to build trust and a "fear-free" communication environment.
Context Setting (10 mins): We introduce the day's text or essay prompt, connecting it to real-life situations to increase motivation.
Core Guided Practice (25 mins): Interactive reading or outlining where we collaborate on identifying "text-based evidence" for their arguments.
Independent Workshop (15 mins): The student applies what we’ve discussed by drafting a section of an essay or analyzing a character passage while I provide real-time feedback.
Wrap-Up & Goal Setting (5 mins): We summarize key takeaways and set a specific goal for the next session.
What Sets Me Apart
Relatability: As a student currently in the system, I remember exactly what it’s like to struggle with these same topics, allowing me to share practical, student-tested study strategies.
Modern Tools: I integrate current digital research and writing tools that professional tutors may overlook.
Empowerment: My goal is to build independent learners. I act as a "cheerleader" who teaches strategies they can use long after our session ends.
Who the Lessons Are For
Elementary Students (Grades 3–5): Focusing on reading fluency, basic paragraph organization, and finding joy in stories.
Middle School Students (Grades 6–8): Specifically, those transitioning to more rigorous literary analysis, 5-paragraph essay structures, and complex character development.
