About Tamara
I work professionally as a Senior Software Engineer, primarily in Ruby on Rails. My educational background was in Philosophy, so my approach to learning technical skills is a little different from the average engineer -- I believe that anyone can learn to code if they want to, the same way that anyone can learn a new spoken language. It might come more naturally to some, but a creative approach to the process can always get you there in the end.
As well as writing code in Ruby, I spent many years working with Javascript and front end frameworks, so I can provide plenty of guidance in that area too.

As well as learning basic syntax, I try to focus on broader skills within programming. I provide an emphasis on problem solving and breaking down abstract concepts so that they can be represented clearly in code, with references to different design patterns and software architecture concepts to help you learn how to build great applications.
In my experience, knowing what questions to ask when you're stuck is half the battle to getting the answer, so I encourage out of the box thinking and learning how to "zoom out" from your problem to see the bigger picture. With me you'll learn how to "code defensively" to avoid common pitfalls when building a Rails app, as well as skills in debugging your own code so that you can learn from your own foibles as you grow.
I'm primarily interested in teaching those who are trying to get started in writing software, or have some experience but want help leveling up their skills to get a foothold in the industry. I'm focused on practical problems solving and working applications over teaching esoteric programming concepts.
People from all walks of life are welcome. This is a LGBTQ+ friendly space
