About Deborah
- What kind of experience do you have? Taught in schools in UK and Kenya for over 25 years - English A level/GCSE/IELTS/Ukiset/Common entrance. I have an English Literature degree from a prestigious British university, a Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education (PGCE) as well as over 17 years English national examining experience for several boards. I have enormous amounts of experience teaching English; I taught GCSE and A levels at the independent Claires Court Schools for 22 years. I am currently teaching 5 11 plus students one-to- one who are aiming for the top London schools; three grammar school girls for GCSE; several Chinese students in China on a daily basis in order for them to achieve top marks in the IELTS exams and the UKiset. I am also coaching students for the 13+ entrance exams for various schools in the UK including Eton and Wycombe Abbey. My 13+ pupils have gone on to Sevenoaks, Wellington and Wycombe Abbey. In the state sector - I have successfully tutored students for QE London, Henrietta Barnett, London and Nonsuch, London as well as Kendrick and Reading Boys; these establishments are among the very top grammar schools in the country and require intense expert tutoring. In my teaching career, I increased results at A level from D to A and at GCSE, I have a track record of getting very under-performing students through but my specialism is high performing pupils aiming for the top schools in the country. Many of my GCSE students go on to achieve an 8 or a 9 from significantly lower predictions. My enthusiasm and professionalism create an environment where pupils can succeed. I have vast experience in the English examining sphere - I was A level Principal on one English Literature paper and Assistant Principal for the EPQ - a difficult extended essay writing paper at A level. I was on the senior English A level examining team at a national exam board for 10 years. I have a YouTube Channel where I upload revision videos for my students. I also have significant experience getting students through the 11 Plus via focused summer holiday tuition. Many years ago I was a journalist and author so I also bring real-world expertise to my lessons. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Yes - Where and with whom did you train? I taught English at Claire's Court School for 22 years; I specialised in GCSE and A level English Language and Literature. Before that I taught at Hillcrest School, Nairobi, Kenya. , I was also a journalist and author and became a teacher after I had children. After my hard but rewarding years in the classroom, for the last 8 years I have used my expertise to teach English language and literature at all levels but I particularly specialise in 11 Plus, A level and GCSE English tuition online and face to face. My subject knowledge is impeccable - I went to Birmingham University where I was awarded a degree in English Literature and Russian and I have a PGCE in Secondary English (1997), -

I am an expert English teacher with over 25 years' experience in a prestigious independent school and 17 years examining GCSE and A level English for three exam boards. - Subject specialism: Preparation for GCSEs and A levels/11+ and ISEB, Common Entrance.. Each lesson is different and I tailor the resources and lessons to the pupil's individual needs. Each lesson has Spag - spelling, punctuation grammar, a reading, comprehension and writing section (this is often where I set the homework and feedback on last week's written submissions) Homework consists of at least 1 1/2 hours work Exam boards I specialise in - English Language and Literature GCSE and A Level: AQA 8700 English Language and 8702 English Literature, WJEC, OCR, Edexcel and Cambridge (CIE). Most of my teaching is online but happy to do face to face if local. - In all my lessons - we work on shared documents and utilise a virtual classroom. This way I have taught students located in places as varied as Southall, Switzerland, Moscow, Delhi and China. My expertise and enthusiasm really push children on to the next level. I use Google Classroom which enables my students to gain access to my resources easily. My YouTube channel, ActionmediaUK is also a valuable resource for my pupils. During the lesson, I always do some spelling punctuation and grammar (Spag), set a piece of homework for formative assessment and cover a learning objective such as how to use similes or WAA sentences (Weather action adverb). I also have videoed templates on exam topics such as persuasive writing. Qualifications: I have excellent qualifications and experience to improve your child's chances significantly. I have BA Hons English Literature and Russian. Birmingham University. PGCE Secondary English 1998. I also examined English for 17 years for a national exam board at both GCSE and A Level. I have been in charge of an A English Lit level paper and I was involved with A Level English Lit and Lang exam coursework moderation for over 20 years I will bring references and certificates to our first set up lesson. - I tutor now via Zoom or WhatsApp - I am available all week - weekdays. And throughout the holidays. - suitable for students aged from 9-19 - Qualifications preparation: IELTS 5.5 - 7+ Ukiset 11 Plus English Common entrance exams for public/independent schools , ISEB, A level Literature and Language exams GCSE English Language and Literature - all boards -. I teach via Zoom and face to face . I offer a top-quality service with a guaranteed outcome. I will bring references and certificates to our first set up lesson. All my lessons materials are available online; I use Google Classroom where we can both work on shared documents, and store all the work in a stream to return to as revision. We also use YouTube to study topics such as poetry, creative writing and English Language and Literature papers 1 and 2. I make my own videos and use a variety of online resources to keep lessons fun and interesting! - I love English teaching and helping young people learn the delights and intricacies of communication effectively and creatively in English. I believe in making tutoring fun and a rewarding experience. We focus on reading and extrapolate the other skills from there. Without a reading habit, it is very difficult to develop the attendant skills of writing/comprehension and speaking articulately. I will, if at all possible, let the pupils guide me in his or her interests and/or we will supplement what they are doing at school. - Classes I currently teach: English Language and Literature at GCSE (AQA/Edexcel/OCR) and up to A level (Cambridge/AQA). I also examine English for a national exam board at both GCSE and A Level. I have been in charge of an A level paper and I am currently involved with A Level exam coursework moderation. English is the key to success in all subjects at all levels and it is vital to develop these comprehension and language skills at as early an age as possible. So I tutor from primary upwards to inculcate the necessary habits and approach in children. Some of my students I have had from 11 Plus though to GCSE which is a wonderful gift. As we all know, early work on the foundations of reading and writing can guarantee success at GCSE and A Level in all subjects- My students welcome our weekly meeting which makes learning fun and successful! - I hope all the above was helpful and I look forward to meeting you Deb -
