About Matthew

I am a leading history teacher at a comprehensive school in South Somerset. Have experience in both OCR and Edexcel exam boards and I am an examiner for the former.

I have successfully tutored candidates over the years: all dramatically improving from their initial mock results. Two students went from a grade 6 mock to grade 9 final result. One student went from grade 5 mock to grade 7 final result. I also have a track record of progress within my school - achieving several Grade 9 outcomes for history

My topic specialisms are mainly in Early Modern history and the history of the British Army/Navy. My masters thesis on the Edwardian Navy was recommended to the field. I also know a wide range of time periods through my teaching of GCSE history.

About the lesson

I have studied history from GCSE through to Masters level. The key to not just passing, but achieving the highest grades has relatively little to do with your ability to memorise facts, rather your ability to be original and argue with the appropriate evidence. I accomplish this by dragging history away from the textbook and focusing on how you can demonstrate outstanding history skills in your writing. After all, written words are how historians communicate. Communicating effectively through essays/extended answers is pivotal for the top 7+ grades.
