About Lizzie
With over 7 years of experience as an ESL tutor, I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of students, ranging from young beginners to advanced adult learners, each with their own unique goals and challenges. My teaching philosophy centers on creating personalized lessons that address individual needs while promoting practical, real-world language use. I emphasize communicative competence alongside grammatical accuracy, believing that language is best learned through meaningful interaction rather than rote memorization. To this end, I incorporate authentic materials such as news articles, podcasts, and everyday dialogues to immerse students in the language as it is naturally spoken. I am skilled at breaking down difficult grammar points and vocabulary into clear, manageable parts, using visual aids, examples, and analogies to enhance understanding. Moreover, I integrate technology like language apps and online quizzes to provide additional practice outside of lessons. I prioritize creating a warm, supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves, experimenting with new language, and learning from mistakes without fear of judgment. My lessons are interactive, with a mix of speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities designed to boost confidence and fluency. Whether preparing students for exams, job interviews, or travel, my ultimate goal is to help learners develop the skills and motivation to communicate effectively and independently in English, empowering them to thrive in their academic, professional, and social lives.

In my approach to teaching English as a Second Language, I prioritize practical communication skills while integrating a solid grammatical foundation to ensure students develop both confidence and accuracy. I believe language learning is most effective when it’s tied to real-world situations, so my lessons focus heavily on functional English that students will use in daily interactions. Whether it’s greeting a colleague, making small talk, or navigating a job interview, I emphasize communication from day one.
At the same time, I incorporate grammar in a natural, contextual way. Grammar is often seen as a set of rules, but I show students how it serves as the skeleton of effective communication. For example, we might explore tenses by discussing past experiences and future goals, thereby using grammar to enhance clarity and meaning in conversations. Creativity is also key in my lessons. I use storytelling, role-plays, and discussions about topics that interest students to make learning more engaging and relevant.
I encourage them to be curious and to take risks with language, which creates a more dynamic and enjoyable learning experience. I understand that every learner has unique goals, whether it’s improving speaking fluency, passing a specific exam, or preparing for professional communication, and I adapt my lessons accordingly. One rewarding moment in my teaching career was helping a student prepare for a job interview.
Through focused practice on professional language, body language, and pronunciation, we were able to reduce their anxiety and improve their performance, and they landed the job. I also leverage technology to supplement learning—using apps, podcasts, and online resources for extra practice, which helps students stay motivated between lessons. Above all, I see my role as a guide, helping students navigate their language learning journey with a sense of purpose, self-assurance, and excitement.
