About Maria Valentina

I grew up in Colombia and moved back and forth between the United States and Colombia starting at the age of 12, giving me a solid foundation in both languages and cultures. Currently, I am a POSSE scholar at Pomona College, majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, with plans to pursue a PhD in the near future. My fascination with how the brain works, including various learning approaches, has led me to craft lesson plans with strategic purpose. As an avid music and film enthusiast, I also enjoy reading, practicing yoga, and taking walks in nature. These interests inform my teaching style and help me create engaging, multifaceted learning experiences for my students.

About the lesson

My priority is for you to learn, and going through vocabulary words will not be as effective, especially if you want to actually learn the language. I construct different styles of learning to ensure that this is not seen as a chore but as a fun experience that will allow you to practice real-life application of the language!

(1) Go over your homework/classwork + similar examples and walk through them to gain a full understanding of the concepts (pronunciation + real-life application).

(2) Music + Movie Approach: To help you understand how Spanish works, we will discuss your favorite genres of music and movies. In your leisure time, we will incorporate things you love to enhance your learning. I will assign you 1-2 songs/movies, whose story I would like you to construct and understand. Then we will discuss the story and break through the translation together for you to fully understand the structure of storytelling through the Spanish language.

(3) Conversational Tutoring: One-on-one discussions giving you the liberty to apply critical thinking and encouraging you to connect the words to real-life conversations. I am here not to give you answers but to help you learn the language. You can choose the topic beforehand, and I will guide the conversation (unless you decide you would like to lead it instead!).

(4) Grammar + Vocabulary: Let's play a game where we can incorporate fun into learning your vocabulary. We can find different ways to enhance your memory and walk through examples of applying this vocabulary in real-life contexts.
