About Melanie

Born in New York to a Uruguayan family and raised in Buenos Aires, I bring a unique bicultural perspective to my teaching and scholarship. As a university Spanish professor and graduate student of Spanish, I combine academic expertise with lived experience across diverse Spanish-speaking communities. I am also a musician, and Latin American music has always been a central part of my identity, shaping the way I understand language, culture, and artistic expression. This interdisciplinary perspective allows me to connect language learning with the rich cultural traditions of the Spanish-speaking world, helping students experience Spanish as a living language. Whether teaching beginning learners, advanced university students, or heritage Spanish speakers, I strive to create an inclusive, engaging learning environment where language becomes a bridge to meaningful communication, critical thinking, and cultural understanding.

About the lesson

As a native Spanish speaker from Uruguay who grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I offer students an authentic and immersive learning experience rooted in both language and culture. With four years of experience teaching Spanish in higher education and as a graduate student specializing in Spanish, I combine academic expertise with practical, real-world communication.

I believe that learning a language is about much more than memorizing vocabulary and grammar—it's about building confidence, understanding culture, and developing the ability to communicate naturally. My goal is to create a supportive, engaging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and progressing at their own pace.

Every lesson is personalized to meet each student's goals, whether they are learning Spanish for school, work, travel, heritage language development, or personal enrichment.

My lessons focus on developing all four essential language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I use a communicative, student-centered approach that integrates grammar into meaningful conversations and real-life situations. Lessons include authentic materials such as articles, videos, music, podcasts, and current events from across the Spanish-speaking world, helping students build both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding.

For heritage speakers, I provide specialized instruction that strengthens literacy, expands vocabulary, refines grammar, and builds confidence in both formal and informal Spanish while honoring each student's linguistic background.

A typical lesson begins with a conversation warm-up and a review of previous material, followed by vocabulary and grammar presented in practical context. We then move into interactive speaking and listening activities, reading or media analysis using authentic Spanish-language resources, and personalized feedback on pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Each lesson concludes with practice strategies and goals to continue your progress between sessions.

What makes my teaching unique is the combination of my academic training and authentic cultural experience. Having grown up between Uruguay and Argentina, I provide insight into the language, accents, expressions, and traditions of the Río de la Plata region while also teaching standard Spanish that is understood throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

My experience teaching in higher education allows me to support students at every stage of their language journey—from complete beginners to advanced learners preparing for university coursework, professional communication, or proficiency exams. I also have extensive experience working with heritage speakers, helping them strengthen their reading, writing, and formal communication while celebrating the Spanish they already bring from home.

I work with learners of all levels, including complete beginners, intermediate and advanced students, high school and university students, graduate students, heritage Spanish speakers, professionals, travelers, and anyone looking to improve their confidence and fluency.
