About Evelyn

Before leaving Colombia and moving to the UK, I decided that I was ready to come back to teaching not only because it’s what I love doing but I felt that in my previous position as state coordinator for bilingualism I had gained the necessary skills to go beyond just being a good teacher in terms of being a subject expert but by becoming a more holistic teacher i.e. one that focuses on the development of a broader set of competences that empower the student to become an independent learner. My development as a teacher has come from working in the area of bilingualism within the public sector. This work, has given me the opportunity to be trained first hand in the pedagogy of international curriculums i.e. International Baccalaureate and Cambridge International Curriculum, where I have accompanied official representatives on school inspections giving me a unique insight into what is required to become successful at this level as both a teacher and a learner. I was able to use the acquired techniques while I was working as a teacher trainer on the Spanish and English program in the local public university with soon to become language teachers. It is this opportunity in helping others to discover their potential that I find most rewarding in teaching.
Even though I do not have specific experience in preparing students for Oxbridge, I have successfully prepared students for the National University entrance interview and exams in Colombia as well as having helped in-service teachers apply for (and win) international scholarships to the USA, UK, India and the Republic of South Korea as well as organising ‘immersion programs’ for intensive language acquisition in the US and the UK. The process for a successful application/interview is similar to that required within the Oxbridge process, in the sense that they require the applicant to be resourceful, critical, solution-focused, innovative and effective. Again, the success that the applicants have had, has come from the focus of empowering the students unlock their potential.
I feel that when teaching languages, at least in Colombia, there is a strong emphasis on the learning of the language and its component parts i.e. grammar, syntax, phonetics, etc. without necessarily providing an interesting context for learning for your students. Providing this context is key to creating a motivating environment in the classroom which allows for ‘real’ learning to take place. Language is culture and as a teacher I use my passion for politics, society, music and literature to stimulate debate and interest amongst my students. The world is an exciting place and understanding a language and its culture allows an individual to gain such a deeper understanding of why people act, behave, talk and speak the way they do.
As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, motivation is key to learning. This is true just as much for the content as it is for the method of delivery. During my time as bilingual coordinator I had the opportunity to work with several technology providers through a national government initiative to provide public schools in low income areas with laptops and tablets. The impact of providing this technology was evident in the form of increased interest in any subject which used the equipment, however this impact was short-lived as the teachers using the technology lacked the necessary pedagogical skills to effectively teach. With a team of content and educational technology experts we had to quickly design and implement training courses in the areas of digital pedagogy that focused on the affordances of the technology for teaching i.e. not on the app, software or gadget per se but on the way that educational technology can transform the way students learn by developing more autonomous, critical and effective learners.
