About Paul

I am a friendly and enthusiastic history graduate having gained a first class degree in Mediaeval History from the University of St Andrews in 2009. As an undergraduate I won several class prizes, and was also awarded an M.Litt Scholarship enabling me to complete a masters degree. In 2011 I was awarded a Deas Scholarship at the University of Bristol, where I was based as a research student for five years, pursuing my own research interests and participating in departmental teaching.

I can offer English or history tuition for Key Stage 2, and specialist history tuition from Key Stage 3 through to sub-honours years at university. I can also offer tuition aimed at developing broader skills such as exam technique and improving writing skills. I have a good deal of experience in working with young people of widely-differing ages and abilities to develop, shape and stretch their skills, to enable them to achieve their full potential.

Some examples include:

Key Stage 2: As holder of a Deas Scholarship, I was the co-ordinator and co-creator of a university scheme for local pupils. Workshops were held throughout the year in local primary schools focussing on their local history topic. I both designed and delivered fun activities based around original sources and the most recent academic research, carefully crafted to complement teaching of the National Curriculum.

Key Stage 3: For two years I mentored a small group of pupils in a private school in the centre of Bristol. I worked to enhance pupils' understanding of various topics from the school's own syllabus but also to move beyond this to stretch the most able and deepen their understanding of the subject in general. This frequently involved exploring the issues which arise the study of history including exploring different ways of carrying out research, and examining different kinds of source material.

University: In the tutorials I led, I guided students from a state of no prior specialist knowledge to being fully prepared to sit first-year exams. Teaching duties involved designing and selecting the content for a number of sessions to supplement a core of 'set texts', to provide the very best coverage of important ideas and themes from the period.

Personally, I have always been driven to perform to the best of my ability academically. I strive to inspire young minds to do the same and to be the very best they can be, and to generate real enthusiasm in others for learning.
