About James
I’m James — a vocal coach and performer based in Stafford, UK.
I’ve spent over 15 years performing across the Midlands in concerts, gigs, and leading musical theatre roles including Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Jamie in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Evan in Dear Evan Hansen.
Performance experience shaped my teaching philosophy. On stage, your voice either works or it doesn’t. You need reliability, not luck. That’s the standard I teach to.
Alongside performing, I’ve trained extensively in modern vocal technique and Speech Level Singing (SLS), studying with internationally acclaimed coaches and exploring multiple vocal systems to build a broad, science-informed understanding of the instrument.
What makes my coaching different:

I am a Registered Private Teacher with the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) and fully insured.

My lessons are structured, practical, and built around real progress — not guesswork.
Whether you're a complete beginner, a musical theatre performer preparing for an audition, or a gigging singer wanting better stamina and reliability, we build your voice step by step with clarity and purpose.
I teach using a science-informed Speech Level Singing approach, meaning we focus on understanding how your voice works — not just copying sounds.
In lessons, we work on:
• Connecting chest and head voice smoothly
• Building a reliable mix without strain
• Expanding range safely
• Improving breath control and vocal stability
• Strengthening tone and clarity
• Developing stamina for performance
• Learning to self-correct using critical listening skills
A major part of my teaching is helping you develop the ability to hear and fix issues yourself. Instead of becoming dependent on a teacher, you learn how to analyse your own sound, recognise tension, and adjust intelligently.
That’s how real long-term improvement happens.
Each lesson includes:
• Targeted warm-ups tailored to your voice
• Technical exercises focused on your specific goal
• Direct application into a song
• Clear explanation of why each exercise works
After every lesson, you receive a PDF lesson summary outlining:
• What we worked on
• Key technical reminders
• What to practise
• How to structure your practice
This keeps your training focused and organised between sessions.
Lessons take place in a purpose-built vocal studio in Stafford — a dedicated, professional teaching space designed for focus, sound clarity, and comfort. This isn’t a spare room setup. The environment supports serious work while remaining relaxed and welcoming.
Online lessons via Zoom are also available and can be recorded so you keep access to every exercise and explanation.
I work with Adult singers including:
