About Maya

Hello everyone! My name is Maya Cho~
I’m a certified Japanese teacher with over 10 years of online teaching experience. I passed the JLPT N1, hold Arizona state Japanese teaching certification, ACTFL certification, and worked at a Japanese university for 5 years.

I also teach world history and Korean, and love discussing history and culture with my students. I have lived in Osaka and Seoul, so I also enjoy sharing stories and chatting about these places with my students.

Some of my hobbies and interests include:

K-pop & K-dramas
Korean culture
History
I love chatting about these topics with my students and using our shared interests to make language learning more fun and engaging!

My teaching motto is; "Connection, not perfection! " Mistakes are part of learning, and every step forward helps you grow. I believe learning is most successful when students feel comfortable, curious, and excited to learn.

Japanese Lessons with Maya — Personalized 1-on-1 Instruction

Whether you're starting Japanese from zero, preparing for the JLPT, or simply want to become more comfortable speaking, I'll create lessons around your level, goals, interests, and learning style.

All lessons include:

Materials & Resources

Students can choose a structured textbook pathway or learn through my original curriculum, which includes 1,000+ pages of original slides, activities, homework, and digital resources.

Depending on your goals, we may use:
Genki • Marugoto • Quartet • TRY! • AIJ • or another preferred textbook

Japanese Lesson Options:

1. Personalized Lesson — $30 / 55 minutes
Build a strong foundation in Japanese with structured, personalized lessons. We can follow a textbook such as **Genki, Marugoto, Quartet, or TRY!, or use my original curriculum and materials.

2. Japanese for Beginners — $30 / 55 minutes
Starting from zero? We'll build your foundation step by step, including:

* Hiragana & katakana
* Greetings and introductions
* Numbers and basic vocabulary
* Family, hobbies, and everyday topics
* Basic sentence structure and grammar
* Speaking and listening practice

3. Japanese Conversation — $25 / 55 minutes
Improve your confidence and ability to communicate naturally. We use the **picture-based Marugoto series** to provide structure and conversation topics rather than simply talking randomly for an hour. Lessons include speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, natural expressions, and cultural discussion.

4. JLPT & Test Preparation — $40 / 55 minutes
Structured preparation for JLPT N5–N4 and school Japanese exams. Includes personalized study plans, mock exams, test-taking strategies, study materials and more!
*Students preparing specifically for the JLPT will need the TRY! textbook.

5. Japanese for Kids & Teens — $30 / 55 minutes
Fun, structured Japanese lessons designed for younger learners. Lessons can include games, visual activities, conversation practice, cultural topics, and personalized homework. I can adapt lessons for complete beginners or students who already have some Japanese experience.

~ Learn Japanese Beyond the Textbook ~

I also offer optional cultural experiences for local students, including Japanese restaurants and markets, festivals, the Japanese Friendship Garden, and other Japanese cultural events.

For students traveling to Japan or Korea, I can also incorporate travel preparation, cultural knowledge, and practical language into your lessons.
