About Janet

Hey there! I’m a tutor with a passion for teaching, with extensive, up-to-date experience with the HSC, having graduated on a 100% Academic Scholarship from SCEGGS Darlinghurst, a NSW Top 10 high school.

Having studied Maths Extension 2, Maths Extension 1, English Extension 1, English Advanced, Latin Extension, Latin Continuers and Chemistry, I know the dedication and effort it takes to excel academically.

Additionally, I came 1st internally in the accelerated Maths Advanced program (mark of 98), which gave me the opportunity to explore the subject in greater depth and build a solid foundation in advanced mathematical concepts.

My tutoring philosophy centers on the joy of helping students overcome academic obstacles while inspiring a genuine love for learning and problem-solving. I strive to build meaningful connections with my students, empowering them to achieve their goals in their academic endeavours.

About the lesson

I'm deeply committed to helping high school students excel in Latin with a comprehensive and specialised teaching approach. Here’s a tailored approach to my Latin tutoring, designed to build strong foundational skills and foster mastery in these subjects:

Latin Tutoring:
Grammar and Syntax Mastery: I focus on developing a solid understanding of Latin grammar and syntax, including declensions, conjugations, and sentence structure. Students learn to construct and analyze sentences with precision, ensuring they can confidently translate and compose Latin passages.

Translation Techniques: Translating Latin texts is both an art and a science. I guide students through effective strategies for parsing sentences, identifying key structures, and interpreting meaning, whether working with classical texts or exam passages.

Vocabulary Development: Building a robust Latin vocabulary is essential for fluency. I emphasize learning word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, which not only aids in Latin but also enhances understanding of English derivatives.

Cultural and Historical Context: Latin comes alive when students understand its historical and cultural backdrop. We explore the significance of classical texts, Roman history, and mythology to deepen comprehension and engagement.

Practice with Authentic Texts: Students gain confidence by working with authentic Latin texts, from Juvenal's Satires to Cicero's Speeches, applying their skills to analyse and appreciate classical literature.

Qualifications:
Having come Dux of Latin Extension and Continuers, achieving a strong 98 Maths Advanced HSC (2023), placing 2nd and 3rd in Maths Extension 1 and 2 internally, and coming Dux of Latin Extension and Continuers, I combine academic expertise with a passion for teaching.
