My lessons are designed for you the student — whether you’re a beginner or intermediate or advanced. If that’s the path you prefer we can also prepare for ABRSM exams, which is one of my specialities. I’ve already helped many students pass their ABRSM Practical and Theory Grades, from 1 to 8, with merits and distinctions.

I firmly believe piano can be learnt at any age so don’t let age intimidate you! My oldest student is 87 years old and has made excellent progress. I’m proud of him and would love to see you, at any age, achieve the same results!
I tailor my lessons to the individual, so currently, with one student I improvise on particular chords and show inventive progressions; one more advanced student is learning Chopin's C sharp minor prelude; with an 8 year old pupil I am taking him through a Pauline Hall starter book whilst at the same time teaching him 'Match of the Day' and 'Shrek' themes that he enjoys, it's really satisfying to see my students starting to read music.
What helped my sight-reading as a 14 year old was spending the whole weekend trying to learn 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' which has a challenging piano arrangement!
I like to focus on the artists and genres that you like. From basic chords, to complex improvisation, I’ll take you through the entire process at a pace that is fun, low-stress, and engaging,

As a composer for film and television I can teach you melody writing, intervals, how to write less boring chord progressions, more colourful chord extensions, interesting alternative chords, what your favourite song or piece is made of. I have written stage musicals so can help you on putting music to words.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I was 7 years old when I fell in love with the piano, I used to listen to my grandfather play on his beautiful Bechstein grand.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I could listen to the piano music of Debussy, such as 'Reflets dans L'Eau' or Schumann's 'Kinderscenen' on a loop!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Let me take you through my writing of my film score for the Princess Diana documentary for ITV, or let us explore the harmonies and background to Schumann's 'Scenes of Childhood', his life and music, how he had to date in secret…!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Well the piano-accordion is complicated. I've played it for many years, but being able to play all 120 buttons, that you can't see, with your left hand with dexterity is extremely difficult! Am still trying.
  • What are your keys to success?

Pursue your dreams and passions above all things. Flexibility and having a listening ear.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning.

Marta Argerich - because of her sublimely beautiful playing; Claude Debussy - if I am allowed a dead composer! - I would just love to hear him play the piano in this bar, hear him tell his story, how music captivated him; and the late Victor Borge - because of his wonderful humour, musical intelligence and technique.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I had a kind and encouraging music teacher at Secondary School, Mr Capstick, who would let me hide in the music room when the gymnastics teacher came looking for me. I much preferred practising Chopin than climbing up bars or trying to jump those massive horses!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I try to find out what a student really likes. For example a current student sent me some raps on YouTube that he really liked the piano parts of, and I transcribed some of the piano parts which he is enjoying learning.
Also, being a composer, I've occasionally written piano pieces for my pupils to learn.
