About Maya

I am an English language specialist with 8 years of experience and a Master of Arts in Business Communication alongside a Cambridge DELTA qualification. I have taught over 330 students, the majority of whom have been working professionals at managerial level and above in sectors including finance, law, technology, healthcare, and diplomatic services. My business communication background means I understand the professional stakes of my students' English use in a way that makes my teaching feel relevant and purposeful rather than generic. I have delivered bespoke English training programmes for two multinational corporations and have a track record of measurable improvement in student confidence and assessment outcomes that I am happy to discuss with prospective students.

English

My English teaching practice is built specifically around professional and corporate contexts, and I have developed a methodology that takes the needs of working professionals seriously rather than treating them as learners who need to be returned to classroom basics. I open every new student relationship with a thorough professional context audit — what meetings do you attend, what documents do you write, what negotiations do you participate in, what professional relationships are conducted in English — and I build a curriculum directly from that audit. Email writing in professional English is one of my core specialisations, and I have developed a framework covering register selection, subject line strategy, opening conventions, request framing, and closing formulae that students can apply immediately after a single session. Presentation English receives dedicated attention in my teaching because it is genuinely different from conversational or written English — students learn how to structure a presentation for maximum clarity, how to use signposting language, how to handle questions confidently, and how to recover from unexpected difficulties. Negotiation language is taught using role-play scenarios drawn from each student's actual professional context rather than invented business school cases, because real scenarios produce real learning. My approach to grammar correction in professional English is selective — I focus on the errors that actually impair professional credibility and communication rather than treating all deviations from standard grammar as equally important. Meeting English — chairing, participating, summarising, following up — receives explicit instruction because it is one of the areas where non-native English speakers most frequently feel disadvantaged relative to native speakers. I assign homework that consists of real tasks the student needs to complete in English during the week rather than artificial exercises, so learning is embedded in actual professional practice. Cultural communication intelligence — understanding differences in directness, formality, and relationship-building across cultural contexts — is included because international professional communication requires this alongside linguistic competence. My students consistently report that lessons with me feel like professional development rather than language lessons, which is exactly my intention.
