About Katie

Hi, I'm Katie. I'm a structured literacy specialist based in Vancouver. I've spent a decade helping kids with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other language-based learning differences learn to read and write with confidence.

My background includes six years working with the Barton Reading and Spelling System and four years as an Orton-Gillingham practitioner. Over that time I've worked with all kinds of learners, from kids just starting to notice they're falling behind to those who've struggled for years and have started to believe reading just isn't for them. I've seen how much that belief can hold a kid back, and I've also seen how quickly it can shift once they start to feel real progress.

I'm currently pursuing full OGA certification to formalize the expertise I've already built over years of hands-on practice. My approach is grounded in real experience with real students, not just theory. I keep lessons fun and encouraging, but also challenging. Kids are always building on what they know while adding new tools to their literacy toolbox.

I use the Orton-Gillingham method to teach reading, writing, and spelling. It's a structured, multisensory approach built for kids with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other language-based learning differences. A typical classroom expects a child to just pick up reading through practice and repetition. When that doesn't happen naturally, kids can start to feel like something is wrong. OG takes a different route. It breaks reading into small steps and teaches each one directly, using sight, sound, and touch together so it actually clicks.

The first lesson is a bit different from the rest. It's an informal diagnostic where I get a feel for what your child already knows and where the gaps are. There's no pressure and nothing to study for. I just need to see how they approach reading and spelling so I can build a plan around them specifically.

From there, every lesson is diagnostic and prescriptive. This means that I am always watching how a student responds, what they get right, what trips them up, and where their errors are coming from. Those responses shape what I teach next. A typical lesson starts with a review of what we've learned previously, then moves into a new concept taught step by step, and includes plenty of practice before we read real text together. Each lesson is built around this one student, not a fixed curriculum.

I bring a decade of experience in structured literacy, including six years with the Barton Reading and Spelling System and four years working as an Orton-Gillingham practitioner. School isn't always set up to let kids feel confident in their skills, and a lot of my students arrive already believing they're just bad at reading. Building their confidence back up is just as important to me as the academics. I want them to leave our lessons feeling proud of themselves.

I work with students in Kindergarten through Grade 7 who have dyslexia, dysgraphia, or are struggling with reading and spelling, diagnosed or not.
