About Jillian
As a fourth year student of Japanese Linguistics at the University of California: Los Angeles, I’ve extensively studied the linguistic foundations of the Japanese language. Informed by the latest research in Asian Language Pedagogy, my lessons will be conducted almost completely in the target language and use a combination of listening, reading, and speaking exercises.
Now all that sounds intense on paper, but what really sets me apart as a tutor (I hope!) is my status as a student of Japanese as well. All the beginner’s mistakes and common mix ups as an English native speaker are things I’ve personally experienced and that I’ll work with you to get through as well!

My teaching method is heavily informed by my own experiences as a nonnative learner of Japanese. As such, listening and speaking will take priority over reading and writing for beginning learners, however I am flexible to meet your learning needs! My lessons are for absolute beginners up to intermediate level learners, spanning N5 proficiency to N3. My lessons will mirror the instruction I received at university level, following the ever-popular Genki textbook series.
