For the past 20 years, I have been a teacher, mainly working with students with behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, autism, as well as students in general education and gifted programs. I have worked with students that are homeschooled, as well!

Every student learns in their own unique way. I lead a structured tutoring session, but also flexible enough to give the student opportunities to make choices and select the order in which we work on the task. For example, when working with a student on reading acquisition, I begin and end the sessions the same way, but give the student a choice in the order of tasks: phonics, oral reading, comprehension, etc. I typically play a learning game before ending the session, although I may play a quick ice breaking game at the beginning of the session.
I take into consideration the needs of the student. Not all students are happy about being tutored. When this is the case, I do spend some time creating rapport in the initial sessions.
