About Keely
I am a young, enthusiastic educator who has a passion for reading! I am originally from Iowa, but am excited to use my knowledge from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) to help me be a better educator! While at UNI, I majored in Elementary Education and Middle Level Education and graduated in 2024. I also had endorsements in English, math, and science. I student taught in 2nd grade where I was able to work with small groups for reading every single day. I also have had the opportunity to work one-on-one with students at West Fork Elementary in the small town of Rockwell, Iowa. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, walking my dog, and reading books!

My approach is student-centered, meaning I tailor my methods to each learner’s needs, goals, and reading level. I draw from research-based strategies with a strong focus on engagement and critical thinking. Key techniques: Scaffolded Reading: I break down complex texts into manageable chunks, gradually removing support as the student becomes more confident. Active Reading Strategies: I teach annotation, questioning, summarizing, and prediction techniques to deepen comprehension. Vocabulary Building in Context: Instead of rote memorization, we focus on context clues, word roots, and connotation to strengthen understanding. Phonemic Awareness & Phonics (for early readers): Using sound-letter mapping and decoding strategies to build foundational reading skills. Guided Reading Discussions: We analyze texts together, focusing on inference, author’s purpose, theme, and structure. Reading Aloud & Think-Alouds: I model fluent reading and internal thinking processes to make comprehension visible. Progress Tracking & Reflection: Students monitor their growth and reflect on what strategies work best for them. A typical lesson plan goes; Warm-up, skill focus, main reading activity, reflection/wrap up. I focus on what works best for YOU. While using different tools and techniques we can find the right ones that help you to better your reading. Lessons are for grades K-6.
