About Matt

Hi! My name is Matt and I am a native British English speaker and teacher. I am currently living in the UK.

I love learning languages - the challenge, and the joy! - and I have a wide range of interests, so I'm looking forward to chatting with you about the things that interest you most. I'm interested in cultures, technology, the natural world, society, food, the future, history, and different kinds of art... and I always love to learn about something new. So you tell me, what shall we talk about first?

I have three and a half years' experience teaching English 1-1 via webcam, just like I will be doing with you.
Before I started teaching online, I had two years' experience teaching in the classroom in China, at secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and several months as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia.

I'm not only a certified EFL teacher: I'm a Cambridge linguistics graduate (with particular expertise in pronunciation), and I'm a highly literate native speaker, with a broad vocabulary and first-class understanding of grammar. You will be exposed to top quality English when you learn with me, besides my understanding of linguistic theory and thorough practical experience of learning languages myself.

About the lesson

A lot of my students like to start from conversation practice, or if you like I can set you a task to prepare – maybe a presentation or piece of writing. I will support you to enjoy communicating with me at your level, right from the start, and will help you to give your best performance.

That will be our starting point for improvement.

I will then identify your areas to focus on (whether pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, or style); I will suggest methods to improve (including more formal exercises, where these are useful) and help you to make the most of them, by setting you tasks, by providing practice as a native speaker, and by giving expert advice on language learning strategy and linguistics.

I am always delighted when you bring your own topics or materials that you'd like to work on together.

Who are my lessons for?...

My lessons are particularly enjoyed by professionals or university students with intermediate or advanced English, as well as high school students.

I speak Chinese and have studied French, German, Spanish and Italian, so I understand the differences that make it hard to learn each other's languages, and I can help you through it.

My experience and qualifications...

I have 3 and a half years’ experience tutoring one-to-one in this way. Previous to that, I gained over 2 years’ experience as a classroom English teacher (high school, undergraduate and postgraduate) in China and Bolivia. I have a TEFL certificate from the government of China and a degree in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge.

Typical length of a lesson...

1 hour is typical, but it's up to you: minimum 20 minutes, maximum 90 minutes.
