About Amelie
Every one of us knows someone who now spends all of their time inside trenches. All of our young men trained and sent off to live inside holes in the ground, which we are told are vital to our success in the war. Why?
10th September 1914. The allied counter attack at the first battle of the Marne had victoriously forced the German troops to retreat back. Despite not achieving the complete conquering of France, Germany had gained lots of land and wished to keep it that way. Without shelter and protection, soldiers die rapidly in the open fields. In order for both armies, both allied and German, to protect the land that they had worked hard to gain or defend and in order to protect valuable soldiers, the only solution is to build what we call trenches.

Trenches are built in order to defend land and soldiers whilst breaking through the trenches of the enemy. As defense becomes so strong with the aid of trenches, attack becomes much harder and this is the cause of stalemate, where both sides can make no advance on the other. Therefore, the purpose of trench warfare changes. Their aim is now to break through the
defense of the enemy. They must gradually wear down the opposition to weaken their defense. To make this possible, both sides have attempted to advance weaponry throughout the war. As a result, we have seen the development of tanks, shells, gas and more. Attacks on trenches have also been seen, when men have had to go “over the top” and venture into No-man’s-land, but success is often rare and there are many casualties.
