About Harmony

I am a dedicated and hard working Early Childhood Studies student and have a strong passion for working with English Language Learners and children from minority families and backgrounds. Through my 4 years of study, I have a wide expanse of resources and methods of teaching that can benefit a variety of learners and suit their unique learning needs. My five years (1800+ hours) of experience working with the City of Toronto, reflects the wide range of programs I have instructed for children aged 3 to 12 such as Afterschool programs (ASC), Cooking programs, Arts and Crafts programs, Junior Volleyball programs and Ready, Set, Play which emphasizes the development of childhood movement skills. I have experience with large and small group teaching during my experience at Sports Camps, Eco Camps and CampTO camps which encourages the need to adapt an environment to match the learner's needs and wants from a camp program. Through the challenges and adversity I have faced, I advocate for children's rights to learning and equity everyday by striving for inclusivity and diversity in my program planning and execution of such programming. My co-op experiences gave me the opportunity to work with English Language Learners (ELLs) in the Grade 1/2 setting while adapting a framework that encourages the development of children's reading, writing, speaking and spelling skills through daily one-on-one instruction, consisting of word puzzles, whiteboards, word sentences games and levelled reading materials as well as creating learning plans that reflect the child's abilities at certain levels of reading. Daily communication at school and through a log book shared by students and staff allow for togetherness and collaboration in implementing We Will Read tutoring and constant development of a child's skills in literacy and academic development.

My techniques and teaching methods as a tutor and educator are to adapt a child-first approach and to initiate topics and activities that the children are interested in. Intrinsic motivation allows for children to ask the questions they want answered and to initiate their own learning by creating suggestions for programming and methods of instruction. I see children through the lens of ability and possibility, every child is capable of being academically accomplished as well as build confidence in the skills they will need in the future of their schooling. In addition, I encourage the need for diversity and representation for children and families who are minorities and strive to create an inclusive, adaptable and flexible program plan that supports the needs of each child as well as develop a child's understanding in their own culture and language and its importance to their identity. I encourage children, especially those who are minorities and are English Language Learners to use their voice and amplify what programs and services they are looking for in order to get the support that they need.
