About Matt
The tutor (he/him) is a passionate music educator, performer, and multi-instrumentalist originally from Downers Grove, IL, now based in Boston, MA. He has studied with Kevin Schoenbach, Catie Hickey, SSG Carlisle, Professor John Manning, Dr. Jonathan Allen, and Victoria Garcia. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Trombone Performance with a Minor in Communications and a Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship from the University of Iowa, and he will complete his Master’s in Music Education at the Longy School of Music in May 2025.
Matthew is currently a member of the 312th Army Band of the United States Army Reserves, performs regularly as an on-call musician for various theater companies across the Boston area, and has run a private teaching studio since 2018. He is one half of the organ/trombone duo Sliding Pipes, serves as the Trombone/Bass-Baritone at Old North Church, and is an active educator throughout the greater Boston area.
In addition to trombone, Matthew plays euphonium, tuba, trumpet/cornet, and didgeridoo. Outside of music, he enjoys backpacking, camping, cooking, and exploring new foods. His current projects include S.I.P., a pedagogy initiative; learning piano; and a recording collaboration with his close friend Myles Henderson to showcase Trombone Gems by H.A. VanderCook for young trombonists.

My teaching methodology revolves around salubrious playing (Healthy and ergonomic playing). I am a big believer in making sure that I provide my students different tools and strategies for their “musical toolbox.” I ensure that they know how to work through repertoire without pain, teach others, enjoy music-making, and know the theory that wrote it. This results in an overall well-rounded human and musician.

Deadly! Within the first lesson, I could very easily tell that he is able to get to know students and their playing, so that he can help them further excel.
- I am looking forward to continue working with Grayson. He came to me introspective, has clear goals, strives to make the best music possible, and am excited for his music career. The potential is strong for him and I can’t wait to help him unlock the path!Matt's response :
Deadly! Great first lesson. Matt took time to get to know us and talked us through his methodologies and was very patient with our daughter. Will be using his services again.
Deadly! Matt's a great instructor! I wasn't sure how I'd feel about playing the trombone, and it turns out it's a lot of fun :) highly recco Matt
- She is so smart and fun! Very studious and already showing headway after one lesson. She knows more than some beginners do after their first month of lessons! Looking forward to continuing to teach and help establish a passion further in music!Matt's response :
Deadly! My son has now taken a few lessons with Matt and he is great. Matt is very professional and teaches with great knowledge and always with positive encouragement. We are looking forward to more lessons with him.
- Emil is really doing a great job! We are starting from the beginning. He is always prepared thus far and very well raised. His strengths are his ears and consistency. Looking forward to continuing to teach!Matt's response :
Deadly! We've done 3 lessons with Matt so far and he is fantastic. He's super positive and is helping build our daughter's confidence with the euphonium! Matt is patient and guides each lesson based off a combination of what he hears and our daughter's objectives. Definitely recommend!
- Ayla is smart, intelligent, and a go-getter! I am very impressed with her tone already and we will work to keep that consistent. A strategy we will begin learning is chunking and patternining. By changing what’s written but staying in relatively the same note order, we find great success with learning the patterns. In order to practice scales, “desk” valve work is very important and will build the repetition finger memory. We will also be going deeper into the intricacies of the euphonium and theory behind the music.Matt's response :
Deadly! Matt quickly developed a great rapport with my son. He was able to assess what routines and exercises my son needed to improve his endurance and flexibility...and he is excited for this next lesson!
- Trent is showing great promise! He has a solid tone and like of his instrument. We will work on developing slide technique, a greater understanding of theory, and work on partial understanding and practice with Natural Slurs/legato tongue eventually. We are also going to work on him doing a daily routine to build up endurance and flexibility. Can’t wait for our next lesson!Matt's response :
Deadly! Matt is fantastic, has worked with my now 11th grade son for over a year now and have seen marked improvement. Super highly recommended, excellent experience and great job motivating his students!!
- Kieran is just itching to learn everything that he can! Once he started focusing on technique and not taking things faster than the most complicated rhythm, we had great success. Looking forward to continuing to work with him!Matt's response :
Deadly! Matt has been wonderful thus far! He is very knowledgeable, patient, and professional. My daughter's confidence and trombone skills have surpassed my expectations in such a short amount of time. I highly recommend Matt!
- Camila is absolutely a delight to work with and always comes with many questions and is very prepared! She is progressing quickly and I am excited to continue to help her develop a love for music...specifically with trombone!Matt's response :
Deadly! Matt was helpful in establishing a flexible practice methodology and providing constructive feedback for improvement.
- Looking forward to helping Zachary continue to learn trombone, he’s definitely putting in the work and I see potential in everythingMatt's response :
Deadly! My son enjoyed it and said it will help him in band!
- Excellent communication, clearly puts the work in, progressing at a healthy rate, uses cross instrumental skills to help learn mastery of tromboneMatt's response :
Deadly! Thanks to Matt, I went from merely knowing low Bb to play a wide range of notes (A, Ab, G, F#, F, E, B, C, Db, D, Eb, high Bb, etc.) and being able to play them well. If you have Matt as your tutor, you will have a fun time and improve a lot.
- Angel shows a great tendency towards a fuller sound in the lower range of the horn. Currently, he is working on expanding his range through the purposeful engagement of his embouchure (straw method), blowing faster air in order to increase the vibrations of his lips to go higher (Airplane +paper method) and to know the positions 1-7 with accurate note names of each partial (5 Note Roulette).Matt's response :

Matt is intelligent, patient, and proficient in trombone as well as music pedagogy. He is patient with students and really takes his time to explain techniques!
I think Matt is trustworthy teacher because it feels like he genuinely cares about his students he’s funny gets results and isn’t to strict about time he’ll go over time if you’re getting work done and need to finish something and won’t charge you extra for it.
As a professional musician and colleague of Matt’s, I would highly recommend working with him! Matt is a thoughtful teacher and experienced musician who is able to articulate his ideas clearly- a crucial trait for a teacher. He’s also a great person all-around!
Great affordable flexible teaching utilizing a variety of different methods and instructional material.
I have been working with Matt for several months now and there has not been a single moment when I doubted his dedication to the craft of trombone performance. He is obviously passionate and it shows both in his playing and in his guidance. I find trombone performance EXCEPTIONALLY nerve-wracking and Matt does a great job making others feel less uncomfortable and nervous in their own playing.
Matt is a pationate and skilled trombonist. His energy and enthusiasm for the instrument is infectious and I can't help but have an amazing time whenever we have a lesson! You'll learn a ton, and have a great time doing it!
