MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My teaching philosophy has evolved as a consequence of teaching for more than 40 years at various levels and at various institutions. It is dictated by my desire that my students :
1) enjoy my classes and realize that learning math could be fun,
2) learn writing math accurately and rigourously,
3) acquire learning skills,
4) see math in action,
5) may feel interested and take more math courses,
6) be prepared for careers in Physics, Technology and other applied sciences,
7) learn the use of computers and calculators effectively in solving real life problems,
8) develop the skill and the will to learn the use of mathematics,
9) see the beauty and versatility of mathematics,
10) enjoy the thrill of acquiring power to learn the secrets of science and technology,
11) best of all get rid of math learning anxiety.
To carry out the above program, I have developed the following strategy.
Before meeting students in any class I contact my colleagues to get as much information as possible about the students’ background and their requirements. I also discuss the grading policies with the course coordinators and set up my approach accordingly. The first day in the class is spent generally acquainting myself with the students. I take attendance and remember as many names as possible so that I can address them using their names and I feel that makes them feel very comfortable. They feel they have a friend in their instructor. I ask them questions regarding their math preparedness and observe their reactions closely. This gives me a real benefit in preparing my lectures. Usually I prepare a small questionnaire asking them about previous math courses they had, about their other courses, about their goal and their major. This pretty much gives them away and I get to know my class inside out. With the knowledge I gain from my first lecture, I prepare my syllabus and first day handout. I refrain from giving any false hopes about grading and at the same time assure them that participation in class discussion and personal meeting me with their questions would be amply rewarding. Teaching basic math requires a more friendly approach and I assure them that all their questions will be answered to their full satisfaction and not only that, I would thank them for asking questions because that would keep me on my alert and help filling up gaps if any. Their questions would provide most needed

feedback. Breaking ice is my top priority. As a matter of fact, over the years I have collected several anecdotes to amuse and thereby educate my audience. I feel accepted when my students talk to me freely and ask questions. It also gives me a feeling that the ideas I tried to convey have reached home. I have succeeded in making my students hold markers and walk to the board with a smile on the face. With advanced students I am more demanding. I invite them to give a talk on various topics related to their course work. This encourages them to read and prepare their course work more seriously. It also trains them in the art of presentation, which is very important for a mathematician’s training. To prepare for such talks they may have to use computer surfing, which is one of the most powerful and essential technic of our time. Over time I was pleasantly surprised by their resourcefulness to collect informationfrom internet. In fact some of them have shown extreme efficiency in the use of sofware such as Power point, Word Processors and so on. Personally my life time motto is : Life is worth learning and teaching only.
