About Jonathan

I help law students turn complex topics into clear, manageable steps so they can study with confidence and perform strongly in exams.

As a career changer myself, I particularly enjoy working with students coming to law from non-traditional backgrounds. Whether you're transitioning from another profession, returning to study after time away, or balancing law with work and family commitments, I understand the unique challenges you face — because I’ve been through them.

I completed the MA Law (Conversion) while working full-time and am now progressing through the Bar Course (LLM) at the University of Law as a Senior Advocacy Scholar. This means my sessions are not just academic, but practical and focused on what actually works under pressure.

As a qualified lecturer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), I combine teaching experience with effective study strategies. I aim to make legal concepts straightforward and approachable, while helping you improve structure, analysis, and exam technique — especially for problem questions and essays.

Whether you need help understanding the law, preparing for exams, or building confidence in your answers, my goal is to help you feel more in control, more capable, and less overwhelmed.

I believe effective law tutoring starts with understanding each student’s background, challenges, and goals. A typical session begins by reviewing your current work and identifying where you feel stuck. From there, I’ll guide you through the material with clear frameworks, real examples, and step-by-step methods.

I specialise in helping students:

- Master the IRAC method for problem questions.

- Write balanced, critical essays with strong structure.

- Build efficient memory systems for cases and legislation.

- Develop exam-ready techniques to stay calm and focused under pressure.

Whether you’re balancing study with work, aiming to raise your grades, or just need clarity and direction, I’ll adapt to your pace and meet you where you are.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fascination with the law took root not in a traditional classroom but during my time as an optometrist and subsequently in the business world. I was intrigued by the intricacies of legal matters that influence our daily lives and businesses. This interest led me to transition into law, and the thrill of breaking down complex legal concepts for my peers during my law degree made me realise how much I enjoyed law.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I delve into a range of law areas, including constitutional law, criminal law, contract law, and tort law. Constitutional law, with its relevance to daily life, always piques my interest. Although criminal law can be a tough nut to crack given its complex and dynamic nature, I ensure my students get a firm handle on it.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

A professor in my law school left a lasting impact on me. His enthusiasm for Constitutional Law and his knack for making even the most mundane legal provisions captivating were truly remarkable.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor is akin to a tour guide in a maze of knowledge - patient, empathetic, and deeply knowledgeable. They have the ability to transform complex ideas into simple, digestible nuggets of information. But what sets me apart is I can tailor my teaching style to suit each student's unique learning approach, ensuring that every concept is understood, not just memorised.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A memorable incident that truly stands out was during a negotiation simulation in law school. I was representing a small business against a large corporation, a seemingly insurmountable challenge. However, my meticulous preparation and understanding of the laws paid off. We managed to secure an advantageous agreement for our client, teaching me that size doesn't always dictate the outcome; knowledge does.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Law can be a labyrinth of clauses, precedents, and amendments. The real challenge? Ensuring that my students don't just navigate but truly understand this labyrinth. To achieve this, I'm constantly evolving my teaching methods, making each lesson relatable and engaging.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Outside the realms of law and teaching, I have a soft spot for public speaking and debate. This hobby complements my professional life, refining my ability to convey complex concepts in an understandable, engaging manner.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

So, what's my Superprof secret? It's a cocktail of dedication, expertise, and adaptability. I'm committed to fostering a learning environment where students can freely voice their queries and doubts. My mastery of the law, coupled with a knack for tailoring teaching strategies to each student, ensures every learner walks away with a clear understanding of the subject.
