About Katie
I've worked with college and high school students as a social science faculty member, program advisor, and academic coach. Universally, students struggle with executive function skills such as organization, task initiation, procrastination, time management, sustained attention, flexible thinking, and planning, to name just a few. These challenges lead to overwhelm, poor academic performance, and even shame. In my efforts to better understand these challenges, I've trained on how to best support these EF skills, and there is good news. There is so much we can do to support the way individuals learn and develop these foundational skills with simple, approachable tools, systems, and habits. There is nothing wrong with you if you struggle in these areas—you may simply need some support to develop new skills and implement new tools with accountability. Much of my advising involves creating a positive and proactive mindset, but the bulk of it involves understanding individual student needs and tailoring my approach to meet those needs. My background includes fifteen years of work in academia, first as an administrator and leader developing co-curricular programs, and now as a professor. I have been fortunate to work on global programs around the world and also to live and work across the United States at a range of institutions, including small private liberal arts colleges and large public research universities.

Many people are new to the term executive function, but it is the foundation of all of our learning, and most of us can improve with practice and intention. If you are struggling with organization, procrastination, time management, or establishing healthy routines and study habits, I'd love to work with you.
I use a personalized framework for my coaching: first assessing student needs and working with students to implement a few new tools and/or simple systems. Follow-up meetings involve working through challenges together, refining our approach, celebrating successes, and keeping students accountable to new tools, routines, and practices. We move from stuck to started together, refining along the way what works for the student and focusing on developing a positive and empowering mindset.
