About Finlay
Hi - my name is Fin and I'm an 18 year old first year at the University of Exeter. My passions outside of academics include fashion, music, exercise , martial arts, video games and films. I took Maths, English Literature and Media Studies achieving BAA respectively (also getting 94% in my literature coursework, achieving full marks in the verse section of it).
Throughout the majority of my schooling life, I hated English and almost anything to do with it, though I understood how I was good at it. Yet, I utterly loathed my English lessons. However, during the year of my GCSEs, my teacher introduced my class and I to literary criticism on Macbeth. This revealed a whole new depth to literature that I had never grasped before and became a turning point in my academic trajectory. I still managed to achieve a grade 9 in GCSE English Literature. When transitioning to A-level, my passion for English Literature did not faulter and I was able to apply the tools I had discovered following my introduction to Literary Criticism into A-level, which led to me achieving 81% in my exam and 94% in my coursework, despite my utilisation of what many considered to be an unconventional revision and writing strategy.
What has fuelled my desire to teach others can be put down to a few factors: my love for literature and in particular, Shakespearean tragedy and the fact that perhaps I can do for others what my teacher did for me; maybe, I can reveal a depth to Literature that a student has never seen before. On the other hand, I believe Literary Criticism is undervalued at GCSE and A-level, and I seek to teach students how to engage with texts using these tools in a way that I wish someone had taught me, as despite my teacher introducing me to Literary Criticism, it was only for a single lesson.

I have achieved the top grades in English Literature, in ways that are perhaps unorthodox to some, so my teaching reflects this. Therefore, my methodology revolves around the fact that there is always more to learn and there is not one "correct" way to approach a text. In turn, I will seek to present students with tools to engage with texts in ways that perhaps they never have before. This all derives from my belief in evaluating as many interpretations of literature as possible, through engagement with critical essays or other means, which I believe is undervalued at school. My specialty lies in Tragedy, in particular, the "big four" of Shakespearean Tragedy (King Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello). I studied Othello in depth for A-level so I know that play like the back of my hand.
My lessons are designed for A-Level students or for GCSE students pursuing top grades and perhaps seeking to take English Literature at A-Level. The lesson duration will be an hour, though perhaps longer if
desired by the student. I will set tasks for the student to do outside lesson time, such as: essays that I will mark, reading assignments or other tasks.
The free introductory lesson will serve for me to get to know the student and the level they're at, whilst also allowing me to note down which texts the student is studying as well as their exam board. If time allows it, I will also go over some of the students previous written work. Following this lesson, I will familiarise myself with the texts and prepare reading material for the student in conjunction with a personalised curriculum. So, in the following lessons, we will cover the texts in a fine tooth comb and prepare essays and revision material, creating a set of tools to ace those exams.
