About Sydney

Hello! My name is Sydney, and I am a passionate language tutor with four years of university-level Spanish study and extensive experience using both Spanish and English in professional settings. As a native English speaker who learned Spanish through dedication, academic study, and immersion, I understand the challenges language learners face and know how to make the process approachable and rewarding.

Before moving to Costa Rica, I spent six months in Spain working as an English teacher and a Spanish program aide, where I helped students develop their language skills in a supportive educational environment. I currently work as an interpreter in Costa Rica, assisting single mothers by helping bridge language barriers and ensuring effective communication. These experiences have strengthened my Spanish proficiency while deepening my understanding of language learning, cultural exchange, and communication.

In addition to teaching Spanish, I also teach English and enjoy helping students gain confidence in their ability to communicate. I am patient, encouraging, and committed to creating a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and growing at their own pace.

My goal is not only to help students improve their language skills but also to help them develop the confidence to use those skills in real-world situations, whether for travel, work, school, or personal enrichment.

About the lesson

Hello! My name is Sydney, and I am passionate about helping students gain confidence in learning Spanish. As someone who has studied Spanish at the university level for four years and currently works as an interpreter and language teacher in Costa Rica, I understand both the challenges and rewards of learning a new language.

My teaching approach focuses on communication, confidence, and practical language skills. I believe students learn best when they actively use the language rather than simply memorizing vocabulary lists and grammar rules. I explain concepts in a clear and approachable way, using examples from real-life situations so that students can begin applying what they learn immediately.

A typical lesson includes a review of previously learned material, introduction of new vocabulary or grammar concepts, guided practice activities, conversation exercises, and opportunities for questions. I adapt each lesson to the student's goals, whether they want to improve speaking, listening, reading, writing, or overall fluency.

What sets me apart is my experience using Spanish in real-world settings. Through my work as an interpreter assisting single mothers in Costa Rica, I use Spanish every day to communicate effectively and help others access important resources. This experience allows me to teach not only the language itself but also practical communication skills and cultural understanding.

My lessons are especially well suited for beginners and early intermediate learners who want a supportive and encouraging environment. I also work with native English speakers who may feel nervous about learning Spanish and want explanations from someone who understands the learning process firsthand. Because I am a native English speaker who learned Spanish through years of study and immersion, I can anticipate common difficulties and provide strategies to overcome them.
